If you work as an independent teacher, or for an institute as a free lancer, you need them to be able to pay your taxes. I am not sure why you would make more, since if you use recibos you'll be paying taxes, and if you work illegally you won't. I am not condoning working illegally, just thinking out loud. To be able to get recibos you first have to be legal to work as an independent. When you get your FM2 or FM3, or whatever the hell they end up calling it, you will also get what is called a CURP, a kind of ID number. With that, your FM, proof of address you can then get what is called an RFC, which is a taxpayer ID number. Once you have those you can then have recibos printed, which you give to your students if they request them (they might or might not, but if their company is going to reimburse them they will), or to the institute you are working for. Taxes must be paid monthly, and I would not even try to do them yourself. The good news is an accountant won't charge you all that much to do them for you. Keep your receipts, when you go to renew your visa they will ask for proof that you are up to date on your taxes. |

A few minor corrections to BBB's very complete post: You also have to get something called a FIEL, which is a kind of digital signature, or Firma Electrnica. Using the FIEL (and those other numbers BBB mentions) you are able to create a master recibo on your own computer.
Every month when taxes are due, you print up as many you need, instead of buying them in bulk at a papelera. When you go to renew your visa, what they want to see is the receipt from the bank where you pay your taxes every month, usually just the most recent one. I strongly recommend using the services of an accountant. Mine charges me $200 a month. We do most of our transactions over the internet, but he will come to my apartment when we need to discuss things face to face. He also does my yearly tax returns for an additional fee. |

An accountant can explain everything. Make sure you get a good one though as if not you'll have to get another one to sort out the mess the original one created. |

Oh, that's right, MO, thanks. I still don't have a FIEL, waiting till the last possible moment since I HATE going to the SAT. And I didn't know that about printing them up as you go, how cool is that. As it is, I am about to throw away half a book of recibos that I didn't use. |

Since I don't give out many recibos (almost none of my students want one), I ended up throwing out about three-quarters of the first book I bought. You really should go to SAT and get the FIEL. When I went last summer, the people working there were very helpful, and the whole thing took less than an hour, including waiting time. |
