psssst... your Highness...

don't trust him... Cool

He could be telling us the truth, but I've noted that he has a tendency to... umm... try to stir things up...

If dmb ever ask you to 'pick a windie..' be very worried.Smile

And really Scot47! Yours was as bad a generalisation as any. OK, a good proportion are 'merchant bankers', but it's as bad as me saying 'all Scots have chips on their shoulders' or 'decent football managers, crap players'.

Why should I hide my feelings ? That is what this is about - not about which accent is objectively better !

And here is a hint - don't believe everything that people say or write !

The story I have heard from an American military collegue is that to an average Saudi, ( Kuwaiti, Emirati, etc) a South African is, well...an Amerikee. There are white people and black people there ( just like in the US) and they speak English ( just like in the US) and they look like Americans basically ( through Saudi eyes, that is) but they cost one third of what an American would cost. Put a South African in a classroom with Saudi students and they would not know the difference.

The only person knowing the difference is the one pocketing all the extra profits- i.e. the owner of the school.

Most Saudis - including those with functional English - do not really know very much about the outside world. That makes them rather like the average Brit or average Gringo.

Their grasp of World Geography is not strong ! South Africa ? Is that near New Zealand ?

A Saudi taught English by a South African may be a little distraught when he discovers that Brits and Gringos cannot understand him.

a. in s.

You make the mistake of thinking that the teacher is central. Languages are acquired or learned. The role of the teacher is marginal.
