That's strange, because the research that I've done has yielded very different results.

I doubt very much if more than a handful of properly qualified teachers get to work in a real 'academic' environment here. Please ANYBODY put your hand up if you have students who could understand anything about linguistics. My hand is not up, by the way.

If you want to earn real money you need to get into a company or good private school with a real curriculum; steer dead clear of anyone who says they want you to teach 'oral English': that means the job is for anyone who speaks English. If you want to have lots of spare time, however, you will not get that and the big money. You can have one or the other, but not both and probably not with intellectually stimulating work. Personally, I do need to save but I'm not willing to slog 20 to 25 teaching hours plus other duties.

If you weren't female I would suggest my position (I am able to live on 2000 a month, here), however, I'm leaving mid-contract because I'm a single woman and there is no social life here. Now, if you could transform into a bloke, even an old, ugly fat one, - no problem - just get yourself a Chinese girlfriend. Free Chinese lessons thrown in. (Most of them don't bother to learn, I notice).

China is not the place to come for a big salary in teaching. I would go for the Middle East if I were you but be very careful and do lots of research to check if you're picking a lemon (I can't because I'm over the recruitment age). Best of all, get out of teaching if you can.
