Spending an hour or more on several crowded buses full of, let's face it, stinky people, after getting up before 7 am, to go teach some brats who don't give a rat's ass about you or English, for the equivalent of maybe 1000 bucks per month, yeah, sounds great, man.
You can do better, and you will.
Good luck and godspeed.

Having actually met the OP back in another galaxy far far away I wasn't going to comment much as I'm torn between hitting him with a baseball bat and slapping him around on the hood of a yellow car. I will say that he knows it isn't the end of the world and knowing PP he'll be back on his feet in know time. Yeah it sucks to get the arse can for something like that, but you do know that with a cup of crap comes a bucket of opportunity.
Scoot around the country some.. find someplace new that you like.
You'll be alright.. find a better place that has housing close to where you work. |

Am I being a "jerk" for saying it is wrong if you are late for work or do not even show up for work?
Try it back at home sometime. Get a job and just don't show up or come late all the time. |

no. if people cant make it to work on time they deserve what's coming.

promotion is usually the path of least resistance in getting rid of someone when their performance is substandard (esp. if a union is involved). we had to do it on a few occasions back home at my last job |

| Dunno, they emailed me recently asking if I wanted my job back, I said no. Life in china is too easy to give up for a 70 hour a week job that is nothing but stress and migraines. |

Was the OP so far from the school because they lodged him/her there, or was this a matter of choice? If you choose to live way far away and you're late to work, then it is your fault, no matter how junky the buses might be.
The manner of termination is odd, but with one of those SAFEA contracts, isn't there a provision for notice and some sort of arbitration. Failing which theoretically you have a grievance and could seek redress (the famous penalty clause, $500 to $2000 in damages)... |

| They probably realized they had just fired their cash cow. It's probably quite a hassle for them to trick another foreigner into taking that job. |

| I always make sure that it's practically possible for me to do a job I sign, but hey, that's just me. |

Why? There are a LOT more FTs who can show up on time than employers who will pay on time.
Cash cows generate money for the employer, not complaints about tardiness.
I suspect you got the dirtier end of the "hassle" stick.
Keep us posted. |

A person being late in China is not the same as a person being late in other countries. My students are constantly coming in late and they have taught them this childish line "May I come in now?" I tell them not to say this and just come in and sit in the back of the class. Everyone is late now and then. You start out early and something happens that prevents you from being on schedule
I wish a had yi mao for all the time I have spent here waiting for trains and buses, or the taxi drivers who give me the run around. But it is getting better little by little. But the one thing I learned when working in Canada was the sure thing that would get you fired was coming in late. |

To be asked to work on a weekend and to refuse is to violate one of the unwritten rules of the workplace. |
