Sorry about that. Your first post sounded like a hypothetical question. |
Well, it is because my question just arose from an observation and conversation as I said above, but what's your point? I am curious to see everyone's creativity and ingenuity. The jokes seemed like a way to not be. |

MY point? Actually, the suggestions you wrote off as jokes were not that far-fetched when it comes to naming a business in Mexico. It's reputation that's going to make the hypothetical business successful, not the name. My two pesos worth. |

Virgin English. Far-fetched at best.
Justin Bieber Bebe Bebe English. Sorry for dismissing it if you didn't mean for it to be a joke.
I also appreciate if you think a business name doesn't mean anything. That helps explain why so many businesses here draw in the numbers but their names are cheesy or without context. I for one do think a name means something, but it seems to be like a hard thing to think up. |

Well, another aspect of naming a business or product is the lowest common denominator....purposefully using cheesy terms aiming at broad, instant recognition. I point to the processed meats company Fud as an example. It doesn't get simpler than that.
I laughed when a bar opened in Acapulco called Tacos and Beer. Nothing fancy, straight to the point. They knew their market well.
By that, how about calling a school Learn English? |

Good point, Guy. But isn't that just like Quick Learning, In English, English Now. The list goes on and on.
You're right that it depends on your target market. If you're planning on opening a school for anyone and everyone, you need to go with the lowest common denominator. Maybe then the problem with the name (because I see a lot of names as bad) is due to the problem with the target audience: too broad. |

Maybe I'm too Mexican.
There is a newish language school in our small city called, Idiomas Enlansados. I saw it and thought, cute name, but I doubt it's any good. |

That makes Phil's suggestion a better one in Englishtec. It speaks technology, maybe implying using it to learn, or English for techs....a more specific market.
Here's a game to play to make this fun. Come up with a school name for each of the following groups:
Taxi drivers
Used car salesmen
Secretaries |

It goes back to Sam's comment that the name really doesn't make or break it for Mexicans. |

Or at least that no thought is put into the name or often business plan, which would explain why these things keep popping up all over the Mexican map. |

Yes, mejms, but this is a different culture from ours and you've obviously noticed that many things are done differently than we are used to. We are maybe assuming that "no thought" goes into naming or running the business. |

My wife and I have "discussed" this many times.

Sorry, Sam, that just doesn't cut it. We've given plenty of examples of weak, repeated names. Give me a reason to think that they've been really thought out. |
