Dear Sasha,

"And since when is C1 possible without a doubt only after a long stay in immersion?"

Since the introduction of the newest methodology, The Water-boarding Technique, designed and perfected by the CIA to draw out reluctant speakers and make them extremely loquacious, garrulous even.

I'm surprised you're not up on the latest.

Regards,
John

I am glad to be of service to you, as always. However, I am not sure about your sources there, or the levels described.

B1+ - B2 loosely corresponds to Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate level

C1 ia Advanced

C2 is Very Advanced

At least that is the descriptor from this course book series, English Unlimited:http://www.cambridge.org/servlet/file/Intermediate+CEF+map.pdf?ITEM_ENT_ID=6452717&COLLSPEC_ENT_ID=7

You can also check out the CEFR/EAQUALS descriptors here. The language used to describe learner abilities is much more precise than in your source:

Dear Johnslat

Nothing cutting edge there. Fascist pigs have always claimed "dey half vays auf making you tok". We Communists are far more genteel. Sleep deprivation makes even the most stubborn sing. Any old TOEFL cd on repeat and piped into the cells does the trick fairly fast.

Up on the latest! Ha!

Dear Sha\asha,

Ah, but sleep-deprivation won't work in my classes, where all the students begin nodding off after the first few minutes. Very Happy

Dear Johnslat

That maybe because they can't understand why they are in an Advanced class when they don't even know basic structures : ) I'd tune out right away too...

Stick on TOEFL disc. Torture them gently. They'll speak soon enough. They'll confess to anything, even to loving Big Brother

Dear Sasha,

I'm not so sure I'd describe being able to use all the verb tenses correctly with just an occasional mistake (which they immediately auto-correct) as "basic structures." Very Happy

Discs??? Good heavens, Sasha - we're not THAT "Advanced." We use chisels and rocks. But the admin has promised that we 'll get papyrus and goose-quills soon.

John

Dear Sasha,

Thanks for the kind invitation. I'm afraid, though, that I won't be Russian over there. As Joe (AKA wonderingjoesmith) pointed out on the Degraded Language and the End of Empire thread in the Current Events forum, my work here in the States is still desperately needed.

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat

The invitation is an open one. Just like our blissful society. Join us after you have educated your homeland. We can send technical advisors to help if you want. Help you to set up local soviets and organize referenda etc.

All is possible. The future is ours!

Hic!
