personally I blame that poster who attempted to out someone he thought was a non-native speaker of English - kind of brings to mind family: Paridae (and as a Brit I'm not referring to the American term chickadee)

5,000 rmb is enough to live on if you are in the Hinterland. But as Prof says, Dalian, Shanghai, Beijing, etc. you will live like a serf.
Now about your priorities:
Teach and Travel? Frankly speaKING, CHINA ALREADY HAS ENOUGH BACKPACKERS. |

Surely the priorities of other people are their business? Besides, who really wants to move to another country and not even explore it a bit? |

| I don't know why people have this obsession with backpackers in China. In my experience most FTs in China don't actually travel all that much, other than to go to say, Shanghai for a long weekend, say. |

It most certainly CAN be enough money. It all depends on the cost of living in your location, the amount of partying you enjoy, the amount of comfort items / western items you need to make yourself happy and the amount you want to travel or save.
Saying that it isn't enough to live on is pure idiocy when the national average Chinese wage is about 40% of that figure. My wife and I made 8,500 RMB per month between us when we first arrived in China; we partied a couple of times per week, ate out most days, travelled during every holiday and on most weekends and managed to save $10,000 Cdn in one year.
I guess that's not enough for Prof though. |

It most definitely is enough - who comes here with money reserves in their pockets? I hear some FTs arrive penniless and have to be saved from their own stupidity by a local employer - and many do get saved! |

we should be grateful for payments many of us consider a low wage - because of the economic incompetence of some of our fellow FT's 
I must say that kind of logic puts the positive spin over low China wages - to its ultimate test
And that is regardless of whether you think the wage is enough or not  |

Hmm, that does seem to be the case. However most coming over here, myself included, just don't have the experience or contacts to find the best paying jobs right off the bat. 40 hours a week here is alot, I personally would not work more then 20.
If your charging the right amount, and getting it, you can do vry very well working that many hours. Like I said though, takes some time, and or a lot of research an question asking to really find out al you ned to know, and newbies who come here are afraid to ask enough questions. I wonder why  |
