I'm thinking about taking a position in the city of Fujairah. Can anyone tell me what to expect?
Are there many expats living there?
Are there any indoor swimming pools in the city?
How is the snorkeling/beach? Any potential for surfing?
Are there a variety of food options? Entertainment? |

Is this ADCO? They made me an offer last year.
I'm off to Abu Dhabi soon to another petrochem company, so have been researching the UAE a lot. Fujairah is smaller, flats are cheaper and there are some hotels with beach clubs. Doesn't look like a surfing place. That said, get a cheap car, do research on Expat Arrivals UAE and Dubizzle and you'll be well away. With the new roads, Dubai and even AD are a stone's throw away. IMHO, Fujairah looks like a nice place. I'll be in the field 60% of the time but rents in Abu Dhabi are extreme that's why the deal I've been offered is better than ADCO's.
I was in the UAE a few weeks ago and food isn't that expensive, especially if you buy 'local' fruit and veg. Salmon, squid and king prawns were about 40 Dirhams a kilo, Nile Perch 20 and mince about 20. Steak and lamb were costly. Things like bread, yoghurt and electrical goods were cheap as were taxis. Beer costs about 40 a pint in a hotel bar, which is extortionate. A shoarma kebab was between 7 and 10 depending on size and cigarettes were the cheapest I've seen anywhere. A BK 'Whopper' was 10.
First time out there? |

Thanks a lot for the responses.
As it turns out, I was mistaken about the exact location of the school. It seems to be located in Dibba AL Fujairah which is an even smaller city(30,000 peeps) located a little way north of Fujairah.
It is Dijar Private International School. I've only gone through a preliminary interview so I'm still waiting on some more information to come.
That's too bad about the lack of surf there. As long as a place would have ample outdoor recreation opportunities, I would be alright with living there for a while, despite the isolation from people. In the absence of both, I reckon I'd go crazy.
Yes, it would be my first time in the UAE. |

Yes Fujuirah now has a nice new mall and cinemas which screen the normal releases. Although quieter than Dubai and Abu Dhabi it is pleasant and has a good ex pat social scene.
Only drawback is the amount of dust in the air from the continuous quarrying. |
