I am a serious (45 year old) teacher with lots of English teaching experience in the UK, plus I have a BA Hons in English Language (linguistics) with two full TEFL modules - Principles of, and Advances in English Language Teaching from Lancaster University, UK.
I have an FE & Adult Teachers Cert (2 years study - City & Guilds) plus an ICT Teachers Cert I got at the same time. Most of my experience is with 16+ years.
I am passionate, loyal and dedicated and I don't have time off. I am also completely open-minded to experiences/cultures as I have travelled a lot.
With a criminal record (DUI and assault) can anyone suggest constructive options?

I *think* Argentina, Cambodia and Turkey are ok.
China didn't use to, but now they do, however there are several ways to get around this
Vietnam does, but most people work there without a work permit anyway - a little dicey and probably only good in the short term
Japan and Russia ask, but don't actually check (again, I think, not sure)
I also had an American workmate who said he has convictions, worked in Saudi and Thailand (both of which require CBC) said they only check if they hire from overseas, in country they don't care. Again, only hearsay.
If someone could confirm these, I would be grateful. |

Well, so far I've got decent interest from 2 in China and one in Saudi Arabia.
Just need to keep schtum I think. Anyway, researching the companies now - thank God for sites like this! |

A criminal background check (i.e., an ACRO certificate in the UK; state police or FBI report in the US) is needed to obtain an employment visa for Saudi Arabia. Job candidates are usually required to be on home soil to apply for their visa.
That said, some Saudi contracting/staffing companies offer the option of a 90-day business/work visit visa, which is quicker to obtain because it bypasses all the documentation, background checks, and med exam/lab tests. However, this visa type doesn't lead to bona fide employment nor residence status and has other negatives as well. |

I've just today sent off for an ACRO (10 day wait, 45 quid) and the China ones say there are no police checks. To be honest I'm just keeping all options open but the Saudi one with Wall St English looks promising.
It seems you need a degree just to cipher/research though stuff on the internet about places/positions! |

Honestly, YMMV if you want to hang out in China.
I have an Associate's Degree and a TESOL, only brought a health check from America, and nothing else but invitation paperwork ready to process. Here's a short version of my story.
Get everything you can without dumping too much money into it.
If you need to make a move, then do it.
I was able to process mine without even being in America.
Granted, I had invitation paperwork in my hand before I left, which is worlds away from rocking up to China on a tourist visa which you should never do.
Anyways...
I have many friends in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai...half of them have done the same thing. It's all about who the people at the school know. I am not talking about working on the wrong VISA, all of my friends have proper VISA types and FEC's. It's just a little dough to make that one guy at the office turn his head and stamp.
Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

Paying the bribe is no different than working on the wrong visa and can get you into just as much trouble.

To get a Z-visa for China you have to provide a police check. The police check for China can be a local one I believe and the visa agents in the US that handle Saudi visas prefer local checks because they are quicker. When I applied for a Z-visa a local city check was adequate. Local city checks where I am from stop listing violations prior to 1991, it must be like that for the UK. That said, there might be nothing in your background check stopping you from obtaining a serious position in Saudi Arabia or China. Get a local police check real quick and do a quick check with an agent that handles Saudi visas to make sure they say a local check is enough. Your chances are good. Your teaching background will get you something a lot better than Wall Street or Berlitz. In China you should at the very least get 1386 GBP (12000 Chinese Ringgit) monthly in addition to having your apartment and utilities paid for. However China takes out taxes.
As far as Korea goes you have no chance of teaching there. They require national checks. |

Your mileage may vary. If 10 people tried the exact same process, you may very well have 5-10 different results.
Also keep in mind VISA regulations change often, so triple check everything. |
