Hey all,

I'm considering the move to China in the near future but do have one concern.
I recently began on Wellbutrin to address some symptoms of depression, and was curious whether anyone has had difficulty finding/obtaining prescriptions for anti depressants in China.

Also, are they covered by the health insurance plan generally afforded to teachers in China?

Thank you for any input.

The school said that you can teach in there even though you have been diagnosed with depression? I would think that it would be a disqualification.

By the way, know that getting pills works differently in China. You can't just walk into any pharmacy to get a prescription. You need to go into a hospital and get a doctor to approve it, and they then make it. It is a bit of an annoying task in China.

I will need to go through that process every month in order to get my Propecia.

You can't walk into any pharmacy in the US or England to get a prescription either unless you get a doctor to approve it. The medication or cost may be different but the basic procedure for getting medicine here is the same as anywhere else.

OP, I don't wish to sound harsh but, if you suffer from depression or anxiety, China could be a very tough place for you!
Especially if you are coming here solo, there are a lot of mental challenges and isolation issues to deal with on a daily basis.
Maybe you have researched Chinese culture in detail and maybe you can even speak a little Chinese, I don't know?
Outside of major cities it might be extremely difficult to get your medication I reckon. I would advise that you bring a supply from home with you.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck!

In fact, getting anti-depressants is much easier her than in the US. Just bring your Chinese friend with you to translate - it's essentially walk in / walk out. You don't have to sit and explain yourself for an hour - and it's much cheaper too. They have the American brand Zoloft
