For those of you who are wondering about the new point system, here's the latest that I've found:

https://www.ecovis.com/focus-china/chinas-new-point-system/

Though I can't speak for its veracity, the criteria are a far cry from those proposed by a few jokey ex-patriate publications.

He is definitely a Category A muppet.

I am curious to see more publicity about this new point system. I'll apply for a Z visa in about a year.

Wow! With encouragement points for "a special talent in shortage on local social economic development", I may have scored as high as 73!

OMG! China IS the Land of Milk and Honey!

Recognition, fame, and glory at last! I AM somebody!

So does this mean that age doesn't reduce points, it just doesn't add any? #confused

The older you are, the fewer points you are awarded.

Scroll down on the chart that says "Age Untit [sic]: Year

If you are 18-25 years old, you get ten points. If you are over 60, NO SOUP FOR YOU! GET OUT!

The points system does exist. It is broadly similar to various charts that have been posted online.

The requirement to speak Chinese is being overlooked for Category B and C applications at the moment.

The only way to actually see the points allocated is to use the service system for foreigners working in China which only employers have access to. The employer initially decides which category to apply depending on their own calculation of your score and submits it. If it doesn't meet the criteria it automatically gets downgraded to the next level.

Once the documents are uploaded they are scored by the provincial SAFEA office. In the management system it shows the applicants points when it reaches the approved stage before the card is printed. Therefore some provinces may be more flexible than others in what they allow and not.

It simply is not definitive until they pass the application.

All I need to do is scratch up on my writing and do the HSK (remembering not to mix up traditional/simplified characters) and I will be well into A territory. In the end who cares, ABC all allow you to work and that is what matters.
