Hi, I'm about to change from a "Specialist in Humanities" work visa to an "Instructor visa".

Does the Instructor visa mean I can work at all the places I could under the Humanities visa, plus high schools/elementary schools, etc.?

Thanks

No. Instructor visa is more restrictive.

really? wow.

So, with an Instructor visa, can I work at the usual conversation schools around the country ("Big 4" as well as others)?

I am changing my Visa now. According to immigration, the school who sponsor you need to provide immigration and other companies written evidence that you are permitted to have other jobs. It was no problem with my school.

No.

Instructor visa= Permits work for/in public schools only

Humanities Visa= Permits work in private schools, companies, and organizations

Since the majority of positions for teaching are through private entities, this makes the instructor visa more restrictive.

This is not conditional for a specialist in humanities visa.

You can't work at those jobs since they are outside of the visa category BUT you can go in to the immigration office with the contracts for the non instructor jobs and get permission to perform work outside of your visa status. I did it all last year and although it was a big hassle to go to the immigration office each time they always approved it no problems, it is the same job after all.

I`ve been through the same thing. Had to change from a specialist in Humanities to Instructor visa.

I wanted to do other jobs as well, so I talked to immigration, and they were able to give me permission.

Again, them giving me permission was no problem, just a hassle to go there.

Hoser,

When I renewed my visa recently, I was bumped from Humanities to Instructor status. The officer told me that, because I was primarily teaching in a high school, I had to have Instructor status, and that it is no longer acceptable to have a Humanities visa for high school jobs (exluding JET, right?). I haven't been able to independently confirm this. Anyone? I looked at the immigration website, but see -

http://www.kimuraoffice.com/welcome%20to%20kimura%20office4.html

It's heartening to know that, with permission, you can work outside the visa status.

No. But they would just change the visa type.

If you work in a Private High School - not an eikaiwa!-then you have an instructors visa, normally.

Exactly! Interac's ALTs work in public schools and do so with SHVs.

For those on JET, which type do you hold?

Not any longer. Interac is switching their ALT's to Instructor visas.

I see. Thanks for the update. It's been a couple of years since I was with Interac.
