I know this is a long shot but does anyone know anything about the African Training Company, advertised on tefl.com? At first glance it sounds like a 401 scam: just too good to be true.

It sounded odd to me as well, but then I had to ask myself why a scam would choose to give themselves such an odd name for this part of the world. I, too, am curious about this position.

Bizarre. The simple answer is to ring Jubail Industrial College and ask. It is beyond me why they would use a recruitment company based in Libya.

The African Training Company is the product of a row between the the British and Libyan partners of Anglo Petroleum Training/Al Mawared, based in Libya.

Anglo Petroleum (APt) is now run by a Libyan lady. She regularly sacks her office staff, pays late and final payouts have been well short of what is owed. APt is a small company and I can think of 8 teachers who left before contract end in a 9 month period.

The African outfit is run by the former owner of APt.

I work for the oil company that has been advertising long term positions in Libya on a 6 and 3 rotation and cracking salaries...see the ad on tefl.com

I'm ok.

To get jobs through 'word of mouth',these are helpful ways to get them.

I have never 'asked for' any plum (or for that matter non-plum) job but people have offered them to me or recommended me for the job because they know they will not be let down and they will enjoy my company.

I am all for people making their own way in life.You choose the road you want to take;the one of coperation,responsibility,sympathy,consideration and kindness that opens up opportunities or the one of the contrary, along which you stumble;going from one pitiful job/situation to the next.Very early on I chose the former. .............

I think ntropy was just hoping for a specific company name. I wouldn't mind either.

About the mechanics of writing, I agree. When typing a manuscript that's going to be printed out, I still do what was drilled into me decades ago in high school--two spaces after a period or a colon. Online it's really not a problem and also considerate to at least stick in a single space between sentences.
