Has anyone taken the new foreign expert evaluation and question test? It is differentas is the English wording. This places on record a teachers qualifications, marital status, psych status, writing and information on record with the ministry of education. Also, regestered schools/universities will be able to "preview" qualified applicants in the future, thereby comparing stated/applied qualifications to those "on record. This is a part of the new 12 year educational plan in China. |

Never heard of it. "New" meaning different than that other joke of a test we were "required" to take a couple of months ago? They asked for quite a lot of personal info. |

Isn't that the one that was discussed a few months ago? It had all of the components you mention and served the same purpose.
If it's the same one as a few months back, several folks here have taken it, several have refused, but all seem to agree that it's a joke.
The general knowledge part is supposed to give something like 20 randomized questions. It gave me 36 or 38 questions the first time I took it, and I had to repeat it again after that because after the 10 minute time limit, it automatically kicks you out for 24 hours.
The questions are absurd on both the general knowledge and psychological part. Some actual questions I had on the general knowledge side were "name the three virtues of Chinese alcohol consumption", "who is the current US president" (Neither Obama or Bush were choices...), "what was the first stop on Hu Jintao's Eurasia Tour", "how many countries are in the WTO", and "what year was Haley's Comet discovered". Of course all the questions are written in Chinglish, and many of the questions, especially on the psychological side, have the same answer option for multiple choices.
I believe I scored 50% on the general knowledge section which is the highest among the 10 or so FT's at my school. On the psychological side, every one of my colleagues and myself were deemed psychologically deficient in at least 7 of the 9 areas the test measured. |

My favorite part of the eval was when I got the results for my essay. High marks were for "grammer and spelling". It would have been too perfect if they would have misspelled "spelling", but spelling "grammar" wrong is still classic. |

i typed out each of those questions in MS Word as i answered them. i wanted to save a copy so i could a. show it to my friends for a good laugh; and b. maybe use it in a future lesson on chinglish and how to avoid it.
here are two of my favourite questions from that exam:
What do u do when u get angry?
I scratch my head
I prefer to stay alone
I look for someone to fight with
I become talkative in order to get rid of the upset feeling
I break things
Do you agree that the up and down is not the real life but trivial daily life is real?
No I would like to have an up and down life
I kind of agree
It may not match with everyones life
Yes I agree
No I am kind of disagree |

Yes, I know how bad their English can be and the lack of "none of the above" multi choise, but the point is that I never saw this record of personal and otherwise information about ones self before. If this is a permanent log of ones self, in the future comparison of ones application to this so called evaluation may be the bar that keeps some out! |

My favorite questions were these:
Psychological test:
How do you feel on an early autumn morning?
I would enjoy the cool weather in fall.
A lot of leaves may have fallen.
I won't have any special feelings.
It might be a little bit cool outside.
It might be draining outside.
Basic knowledge:
Which room of the house is most polluted?
Bedroom
Living room
Kitchen
Toilet |

Getting back to the original post, rogerwallace, is this the same evaluation that you're talking about? If memory serves, the deadline for taking this was November 20th, '09. |

I hadn't seen this before. like I said and coupled w/the newly anounced 12 year plan(which I haven't read),I am wondering about the direction in which the government is headed. During my teaching year in China at several Universities, I met numerous foreigners who really didn't qualify and still more who the students couldn't understand(since when do Nigerians qualify as native english speakers?) The foreign teachers from other countries(mostly Russian teaching Russian) were highly qualified and couldn't understand(other than for pure corruption sake), how these non qualified foreigners were teaching english!
I am just saying-look past the poor english and dumb questions to what is really happening... |

When the first evaluation started circulating, many people (including myself) were wondering about whether or not this was some sort of excuse for the government to weed out undesirables; however, a moment's thought will tell you that the government doesn't need any excuses to boot any foreigners, just tell them to leave; no explanations necessary. |

Looks like another official smokescreen to make money - somebody dreams up an FT evaluation dept. - gets funding, devises the test that they use as proof of a dept. actually functioning - and then everybody gradually pockets a share of the budget that was meant to fund the long-term project.
Happens all the time in so many official projects - just another way of siphoning the peoples money into the pockets of the privileged few.
By the way having that dept. is also a valuable tool for extracting a red envelope from an employer or two. Nothing like a few failed tests and threats to schools that they'll have to replace their sub-standard FT's - to get them banquet invitations a rollin!!!! |

Many of those Nigerians and other FT's coming from countries other than the Big 6 - USA/Can/Aus/UK/NZ/SA are paid whopping salaries of around >3000 RMB a month and given shared rooms.
It's to save money or place money in someone's pocket. |

From my own experience, the photo request is the most critical screening tool used by potential employers. The correct face appears to be what the overwhelming majority of schools in Asia are looking for. Why would employers bother with a test if it excludes someone they might want to hire? What is the pass/fail level? Anyway, who could possibly fail such a simplistic test? |

Who could fail? A better question would be who passed? Some of the questions had no correct answer, others were incomprehensible; most teachers I talked to had no idea what they were asking. I passed the essay exam, so technically I had a grade of 60% overall which is passing, but barely. |

You're right. The concept of 'Pass / Fail' is disingenuous when applied to such an absurdity. An essay? If someone's English level allows them to score your essay, one might wonder why there is a demand for Native English teachers. Surely it's not pursuit of an English accent. |
