I am told that there are some provinces in China where my age (63) will not be a problem given my vast teaching experience.

Does anyone KNOW which provinces/cities/schools these are?

Thank you!

Wuhan City in Hubei Province - I should know, since I've been here more than eight years, am currently in my third full-time job in the city (and that has lasted almost five years alone), and have had quite a number of 60-somethings as colleagues during that time in all three places I have worked on behalf of, including a few who started out as EFL teachers despite being already of state retirement age, all of them men.

There are only two provinces where you absolutely cannot get an FEC if you are over 60 and they are Liaoning and Fujian and last year Liaoning made an exception for me but I did not take the job.

Beijing and Guangzhou regularly waive the rule.

The point is the contradiction. There are no absolutes in China

It doesn't depend on the province, it depends on the school.

I have many reasons to believe that you are correct within the context of provincial policy.

Please show me a single school in Fujian Province in the past 5 years that has obtained an FEC for anyone over 60. They have tried but the provincial FAO has rejected every attempt.

In some provinces that do issue an FEC to those over 60, some schools claim no one over 60 can be hired, but that is an excuse not to hire someone.

Yes, that is what I was referring to. I believe that the OP is assuming that policies are province-wide; they most definitely are not.

Several teachers in Hainan over 60 -- one is about 72, I think.

That doesn't mean it won't be a problem.

But if you look healthy and vigorous, you might do ok. They mainly don't want a teacher who's too tired to keep up with the students, or an old fuddy-duddy, or someone who is subject to illness.

Ummmmmmmmm even in Fujian the rule is not set in concrete. I know of at least one teacher in a university over 60 and at the mill i work at there is a fellow who celebrated his 61 st birthday last month! Laughing

Psalms 7l: 17-18 Oh God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

It does depend on the school's connections and relationship with the powers that be. I know two teachers in Liaoning well over 60.

Re Fujian and being over 60... I'm at a university in Fujian that has several FTs in their sixities, including me. So, just like everything else in China, this 'rule' is not written in stone.
