I'm wondering what ESL teachers do for health insurance while teaching in Thailand. I see MOD EDIT advertises a policy and I imagine there are other ones. I am in my 40s and I have retirement savings (401K type stuff) that I wouldn't want raided due to some unexpected catastrophic medical costs while I'm living in Thailand. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

IF your employer does not have a plan that you can join then look at something like BUPA.

Thanks for your reply. Would you say that most employers do offer some sort of health insurance plan? |

Better schools do, many schools and most (if not all) language academies do not.

Government health insurance is available and I had it while working at a government university. It cost me next to nothing. I was able to choose a nearby hospital as my primary provider that turned out to be more than satisfactory and even had a dental clinic with very reasonable fees.
Here's a thread from another site with more information:

Here's a link to the Thai Social Security website showing the benefits available from the government scheme. http://www.sso.go.th/wpr/eng/benefit.html
I think how much you pay to be in the scheme depends on your salary. I paid about 750 baht a month. The benefits available include free medical treatment, free dental work, a child allowance and unemployment benefit. Exemptions are listed on this link: http://www.sso.go.th/wpr/eng/sickness.html |

If the school is a private one then I believe that options to join the SS scheme are now closed to foreigners.
Some recent change I believe. |

tttompatz, if your employer does not offer you insurance and you choose to do something like BUPA, do you have to set it up before you arrive in Thailand? |

No. You can set it up after you arrive here.
