I hear from friends that there are 'peaceful demonstrations' called for tomorrow around the country - in Muscat near the airport. Unlike other leaders, the Sultan seems to be working to try to keep things together. I hear that he went to Sohar today. Things have been quite thoroughly covered by Oman TV from what I read today. Can anyone confirm that?
I suspect... that Sultan Q may be the first to accept a constitutional monarchy. Because he has no siblings, children, or spouses, he has no strong reason to cling to power. He may be of an age where he can accept just passing the problems on to some sort of government... and let them try to fix the issues.
Purely speculating, of course... but he has always impressed me as a man of intelligence and common sense.

Al Jezeera showed some film of "not so peaceful" demonstrations from Monday. They said 6 more have been killed in Sohar and mentioned a burning mall ... but didn't say where it was.
Off to check your links...
Interesting details... in there... liked that the Salaleh "demonstration" has changed its name to a "sit-in" and the suggestion to send them cookies. (she must have studied in the US) It will be interesting to hear what the Sultan says if the rumor of his speech this evening (there) is true.

Does anyone have some actual experience to report?.......... anything I can't read in the newspaper? What are your students and colleagues telling you? What do you see? |

|

I live near Sohar and took a drive down there last weekend. The protesters were still there in full force. Lulu's was boarded up. The building has been heavily damaged but not burnt to the ground. I doubt it will reopen anytime soon. In fact from the looks of things they will have to demolish it. Basically all the windows and doors are black from smoke damage. The protesters burnt a few cars and one or two other buildings. They also damaged a Omani friend's car which had a UAE licence plate. The road to Muscat was closed during the worst of it.
The protesters have complete control of the main roundabout and are blocking all access to it with lamposts which they pulled out of the ground. People are just driving around the main roundabout and using other roundabouts to get to where they need to go. We saw a bunch of young boys standing in the middle of the highway making cars stop and causing problems. We didn't stay around much longer just in case.
We had protests 2 blocks away from our apartment for two nights. One of them was really large but the protests stopped after Sultan Qaboos announced that he would be giving money to registered job seekers. We received quite a few messages from both Nawras and Omantel telling people what the Sultan was doing about the issues being protested about and asking people not to protest.
As far as I know they are still protesting in Sohar. Rumor has it that protesters from other areas are congregating in Sohar.
Apparently the government sent a mesage in Arabic to people all around the country saying that there were no longer protests in Sohar and that the protesters were actually from Yemen. I have not got all the Arabic messages translated but this is what a friend told me after they had their messages translated. This could cause more of a problem for the government because the protests have not stopped in Sohar and the people protesting are not Yemeni they are Omani.
During the worst of it the government controlled the internet in such as way that we were not able to access the news covering the events in Sohar.
As far as I can see the worst is over at least in our town. |
