I think many of you have heard about this program, 미녀들의 수다 on KBS2. I stumbled across a petition to end the show on Daum. It's even on the main page of Daum Agora now.

Discussions are HUGE.
At first, I watched the show just lightheartedly. Some funny and some annoying things. Now after Mr. Chun's stunt, the show has been scrutinized and criticized tightly. (Though it's so obvious Chun didn't have any ill intention. I wouldn't even bring the word racism for that act. He was just dumb and insensitive to more sensitive eyes.) Well, it seems some expat people went on a rampage but don't forget it was accused of its big fault by the very Koreans, which some people always want to automatically overlook by default. Just a reminder. While most expat people seem to focus only on the cons, I do think it has pros as well. I think the image of witty and native-fluent black lady Leslie Benfield can actually have a pretty quick and effective impact to break people's prejudices. I'm sure she can say she is Korean by any cultural measures. Also, they are often given the chance to complain and rant about Koreans. Some were the ones I'm so familiar with reading on Dave's. Is it just the best to end the program? Couldn't it be any positive chance? Thoughts?

I didn't know your Korean was that great.
Most of the replies are,
1. It was bad.
2. Other so-called advanced countries have such problems, too. Even racially-motivated violence.
3. Racism is too a big word.
3. Two wrongs doesn't make a right.
And it's very easy to register on daum. |

I guess, again, it boils down to the definition of the word and all. I don't think he partuicularly took any racial factor into consideration. Racially insensitive.

No? Did you even watch any? Maybe there are some people who have a problem with the smallest hint of Korean men they despise flirting with decent foreign ladies?  Seriously, those ladies often make comments that would make many Korean men feel ashamed. I don't know if that is equal to raving about how special and wonderful Korean men are and the topics are different every time. It would've been better if they had people of both gender on each side anyway. |

Do you honestly think they would put Korean women anywhere near foreign men in a show like that?
In Korean commercials we get Gweneth Paltrow and various Russian hotties drooling over Korean dudes but never korean women and foreign guys. |

I don't watch TV at all. This is a prime example of why.
And yeah, she's an intelligent, Korean-fluent black lady who works for the Korean government... so why is the only way she can be on TV to do goofy stuff and answer ridiculous questions? It seems like a combination "heh, heh, foreigners speak funny", "hee, hee, watch the foreign monkey dance", plus a little "ohhh yeah, foreign women dig us Korean dudes!" show. Yeah, that's great. |

It's Korean mainstream TV.......why would people expect it be any good?
Korean celebrities are given carte-blanche on programmes like this.Over the top antics,being loud,girl-howling machines etc.
Do Koreans find it that funny or is it just that these programmes(with gag Concert and the interminable game shows with the same people across channels)are all they make in terms of "live"tv? |

Korean TV seems to be a petri dish for all the worst growths and molds in Korean society. Every single awful element of modern Korean culture was on display in that scene.
Now, is it Korean nature relishing in uninhibited display now that it has a stage, or producers appealing to the lowest common denominator of the viewing community like all the crappy American TV shows...? You decide.
Whoever that guy is, however, he is obviously the same stupid, spoiled-prince, jackass Korean male who sorely needs his world relativized by my boot stuck in his ass. |

Yeah, that sure was an awful scene. But do you think that buffoon Chun guy aimed at Ms. Benfield? I can hardly think so. That 'sikeomeons' act was a famous comedy back in the 90's. Yes, stupid, ignorant, obnoxious and incosiderate. However, at least it wasn't aggressive racism in terms of his intention as far as I see. That's all I'm saying.
I checked out the last show. It was better than any previous ones. The educated singer guy Sung Si-kyung was in the panel and other clowns didn't make a big fuss. They talked about things like why it is hard for foreigners to buy a house in Korea, and disrespect displayed to Vietnamese brides and other minorities. I think the rant by the Vietnamese girl had an impact.
Yeah, the 'see those foreigner monkeys doing funny' thing is the annoying part. But a few people on that show are so native-like that I don't think the audience can see them as just funny monkeys any more. I'm just saying there is a bright side. |

Somehow this sounds familiar. Like some Asian guys' rants about American media which is even influential worldwide.  Btw, the guy with Gweneth Paltrow was half caucasian who can't even speak Korean. (I heard he's learning it hard though.) One drop rule applies?
I'm sure there are many Korean girls lusting after Daniel Henney and Denis O and I don't think they exactly think of those guys as just Korean men. |

Non-aggressive racism is just as insulting and wrong as the aggressive kind, D.
Do you think that jackass would have been inspired to make that allusion to the old skit if the woman hadn't been black? If I do a bucktoothed, "reearry berry punny" Fu, Man-Chu-esque imitation when a Korean is a guest on the same show as I am, is it less damaging because that was what they did in the 60s? (Keep in mind that I don't care that Koreans and Chinese are different in this scenario--they all look alike.)
And remember, we are only talking about adults as of now. Think about all the children who watch that show and how they are being enculturated to make humor about non-Koreans.
Seems like another generation will be able to say they just don't know any better.
Someday, somebody has to play the adult. |
