| Never been profitable???? Dude what planet are you on. Because of the combination of the GST and budget cuts in 1993 Canada went from a debtor nation to a surplus nation. 40$ Billion defceit to 12$ Billion surplus, hmm, I guess in some worlds thats not considered profitable. |

You have not given any numbers to indicate proportions; did the GST really, after deducting the administration costs and Quebecois bureaucrats employed, contribute much as opposed to budget cuts, and do those raw numbers offset the loss of productivity and the underground economy created?
After 1993, all of the provincial transfer payments were slashed and provincial taxes went up; in the 90s, university tuitions rocketed upward. Many of us are in Korea (including me) because of those 'liberal' budget cuts. Chretien didn't shrink his bloated government; he just took in the same amount of money and reduced transfer payments. Ottawa went from running a deficit to running a surplus, not the provinces and certainly not the cities. A hogwan director could balance a budget doing that.

Some funny posts here.
My dad did his graduate thesis on how high high heels were commonly being worn and their relationship with the economic progress of Sask. Maybe I should send you a copy of it, eh OH? Cause, that is as casual as your argument. |

| So we're pretty much in agreement about the suckiness of the GST and the economic situation back home, then? |
