Agreed. I have no reason to be there at night as I too am married and that place, outright, gives me the willies. |
Where are you from? Are one of these northerners that grew up in a town of 60 people?
Itaewon is safe, even at 4AM, unless you're female, passed out and by yourself. If this describes you, the you have bigger problems than Itaewon.
I go to Itaewon every chance I get, 2-3 times a week, and I live an hour away. |
FL baby. Miami area. I just can't stand all of the drunks (have I ever told you I hate drunks?). That's all. I hate it when people act stupid when they are intoxicated (or even when they aren't) screaming stupid shit only because they are in a foreign country (I have seen it all too many times in Itaewon) i.e. soldiers telling people to F-off, some black dude picking a fight with a pedestrian, a drunk tall fat white guy walking out of a brothel falling all over everyone's stuff). Yes, I have witnessed this crap first hand. Definitely different from where I come from; definitely something I don't like. |

Paragraphs one and two, perfect, and Kudos to Rawiri and Cdninkorea who have defended Itaewon against the sissies.
But really - Itaewon 2 or 3 times per week and you live an hour away?
Itaewon is essential because (a) it's full of Korean girls who speak English, (b) it's a truly international community which is most welcome in a country like Korea, (c) it's full of foreign food and a decent selection, (d) it's a good place to go for a drink, (e) it's good for shopping, (f) sissies like Dev avoid it at all costs, thus it's a largely whiner-free experience, (g) it's a perfect location, south of downtown and near the river, (h) everybody there speaks English, so if you're truly stuck for some reason, Itaewon's the place to go, (i) it's got a drunken and crazy atmosphere at times without being dangerous or violent for the most part, (j) good place to meet foreigners if that's what you want (which mercifully won't include Dev), (k) it's got bars and clubs, which is nice sometimes, (l) it's actually in a nice location, with the Namsan ringroad and a nice treck to Namdaemun and Seoul Station nearby amongst others. |

This statement is a contradiction.
Anyway, Itaewon is hit or miss when it comes to shopping, and is filled with assholes and chavs at night. And man, if you wanna ride those town bikes that make up the K-Girl population there, god bless.
If you can, y'know, learn to live life here without the security blanket of people sharing your skin color wrapped around you, there's no need for Itaewon. Korea's a big wide country with lots of place to go, and people to meet. |

Well if you want to go native and hide from other foreigners and what they bring to the table then so be it. Personally, i live in the sticks so the odd trip into the place does wonders, it's just good to hang out with friends in an area that is pretty comfortable.
As to the assholes and chavs, you are probably right but who gives a toss? It's a great place to go with a bunch of your friends and whatever anyone else is doing is beyond the point (unless you freak out about occasionally seeing drunken people doing usual drunken stuff or loud gi's who ahev to be in bed by 1am anyways). |

I've found most foreigners don't bring much to the table aside from an buffet of mental, emotional, and alcoholism problems. And personally, I don't have any patience for that crap.
I admit that I have more waegook friends than Korean. But if someone can't live in a foreign country without integrating somewhat, they should have probably stayed home.

I don't disagree with this at all. Sometimes you do need to get comfortable just to blow off some steam. But "comfort" and "security blanket" are often the same thing when it comes to this situation.

People who don't like assholes and chavs, perhaps? It would seem there are more than a few here.
And while we're at it, I'm willling to bet a big difference between the pro and anti-Itaewon views has a lot to do with how attached to the party lifestyle you are. University was a long time ago for me. The lifestyle no longer has any appeal to me. Thus Itaewon is lacking for me.
I guess it's great if you're 23. |

You know, I'm reconsidering this statement.
Most of the foreigners I've met here are stable. It's the unstable ones that stick out in my mind. |

So you don't party anymore? University was along time ago for me too but that doesn't mean the good times have to stop. I'll still be rockin when i'm 60, having a good balance of work and play in life is important, for some i guess play involves things other than drinking, for me it's a good way to socialise (not the only way, but a good way). |

Itaewon is fine. I confess I don't hang out there at night. It's much, much improved these days with the growing variety of restaurants that don't fit under either Korean or Koreanized Chinese food. It's good for used books. It's good for some hard to find foreign foods.
I would hope one makes merry in a variety of places and if Itaewon is your sole watering hole, I probably don't want to meet you. |

Oh man, you guys are seriously missing out. No, itaewon is not sketchy in a dangerous way...just in a washed-up-waegook-who's-upgrading-out-of-his-class type of way. Actually, outside of the resteraunts, there are some amazing places *behind* Hamilton Hotel like Bar-nana, Gecko's Garden, etc etc. Also, homo-hill has great bars that, from my point of view, a lot of straight women are going to in order to get away from the Itaewon Dong meat markets. |

Itaewon is where I go if I'm looking for some foreign food that is not Koreanized. There is a huge variety of restaurants. The shopping might be good, dunno.. never tried. Seems alright.
As for the miscreants who wash up in the wee hours, well.. I'm often one of them if I stay out too late. I ran into Tiger Fancini there and he can attest that I was a bit too pissed as the day broke. But, then, so was he. We saw some weird dudes walk by. Like the guy coming from hooker hill wearing a business suit and holding a notepad. Wtf?
The bar scene is just alright. The only place I've been that I really enjoyed was this dimly-lit, cushy lounge type place, the name of which I can't remember. The other places are a bit too loud for this old man, but still not bad.
Most countries have a Chinatown somewhere. It's a way for Chinese people and other Asians to feel somewhat at home when they need it. Itaewon is the same kind of thing. It serves a purpose. |

Itaewon is just Itaewon. It's the only place in Korea I ever saw an authentic American cowboy with a curled moustache. |

'Brix', 'Briks' or' Bricks' or something I think. I like that place too. It's a pity there aren't more places like it that are bigger.
