I went out on Saturday night in the Hongdae area and encountered some Korean chicks who were just plain weird.
1. Went up to a Korean chick who was sat down. It wasn't clear whether she was with another group who were seated nearby so I asked her if she was with friends in Korean. 친구랑같이 놀고 있어요? She shot back in English "Your Korean is crazy. You are just stupid, really stupid, and so is your Korean."
2. Was invited to sit down by some other women. I sat down and we made small talk. After a short time I attempted to engage them in Korean. They said "we don't like speaking Korean. Go away."
I have found that speaking Korean gets mixed results in Hongdae/Itaewon. Sometimes they are really impressed but on other occasions I have found that they pretend not to understand you, or shoot you down pretty bad. I could accept that if my Korean was bad, but it's just not the case. Odd. Anyone else had these sort of experiences? |

Two options in that area:
1: Bed English (You think you are dating, but you are not..some sex )
2: Dictionary date (You think you are dating but she is just studying....no sex )
----They aren't talking to you because you are handsome. They are probably Korean English teachers looking to improve their skills. I choose option one because I get something too. |

Once I was in Hongdae with my g/f. She went outside to get smokes. After 20 minutes, she wasn't back. I went outside and found her in front of the bar.
Some dufus got a 1-liner off, enough to grab her attention, then he whipped out a Korean textbook, and was trying to practice.
Who brings a textbook to Hongdae on Friday night? |

The vast majority of the who Korean women frequent foreigner-concentrated bar areas in Hongdae and Itaweon do so because, first and foremost, they are looking for chance to practice their english. Plain and simple. They have zero interest in speaking Korean, for obvious reasons, and will receipcate your attempts by either continuing to speak English and/or becoming stand-offish with you
GB, you 've been around here a while haven't you? Did those of type reactions really come as a surpise you considering the area? (The second one, anyway)
What I find even more amusing to watch in those kind of places is the number of sex-starved foreigners making the rounds in their increasingly desperate attempts to score korean poon as the night wears on...I recently brought my relatively-attractive Korean friend to "the Bar" in Shinchon a few weeks ago and went off to use the restroom returning about about three minutes to find thee count-em THREE western guys swarming around here like vultures descending on 50-foot rotting carcass in Death Valley.
Classic.
Anyway, I know some people on here are into that scene so I'll keep the pick-up artist-in-training trash talk to a minimum. Happy hunting boys! |

Maybe they just don't appreciate being hit on. Two of my friends turfed a weird Austrian dude from Club Spot because he was getting grabby with the girls. Hopefully that wasn't you. |

I usually speak Korean with girls when I go to Hongdae and never had that kind of reaction. Yeah, I've been snubbed, but never had them mock my awful Korean skillz. I think the scenario #1 from the OP is hilarious. Your Korean is stupid and so are you. |

Better question: Where are the gyopo girls? |

I am rarely mocked for my Korean skills. Women are usually very impressed. The chick in scenario one was a whackjob. Although not fluent in the language my Korean is certainly good enough to hold conversations for hours on end. It was pretty odd considering that I said one sentence (very basic stuff too which most westerners could come up with). I don't take the criticism seriously but I can't understand for the life of me why someone would behave like that. It's akin to westerners rubbishing a Korean's English ablility in front of them even if the Korean speaks English well. (I have actually witnessed that situation too) Without sounding arrogant I am quite popular with the women generally (back home too). Maybe I was just having a really bad night. |

To be honest not really. The first scenario was a shock though. She was such a mess. That was a crash if ever I have seen one. |

The second bunch almost certainly weren't. The first one may have spent a lot of time in the US but she didn't speak English fluently.

I'm not from Austria. I am polite with women and if they don't want to talk I leave immediately. However, most of the time women want to talk (they approach quite often too).

I've never been rejected because of my poor Korean skills (and they are poor). This is an interesting post though, and I hope others have something to contribute. |

I don't want to sound trite, but it was her, not you. That girl has issues. There's no reason to talk to someone like that, calling them stupid, etc. Maybe she'd had too much to drink. Even after 1 beer, I've seen some ppl get pretty mean. It sounds like you were just unlucky. |

Or maybe she thought he was some creepy foreigner looking for Koren poon and didn't have the patience for it.
Let's face it, none of us were there. |

Just speak Korean from the start. If you try to change from English to Korean there will often be some resistance. If they don't want to speak Korean from the start you can walk away if you want without wasting time. |
