Related to the idea that women make up the "largest group of new infections". Here is some data about who gets HIV and how.

Clearly, male-female transmission just isn't efficient enough to cause an epidemic.

HIV affect homosexuals and IV drug users because behaviors those two groups participate in are more risky. Circumcision seems to make sex more safe for the male when his the penetrative partner, be it in heterosexual or homosexual sex.
