Not sure if there's been a thread on this, but if there was it's time it was updated.

I love a good documentary. I think I prefer them to movies.

Anyone want to share their favourite documentary(ies)?

I watched the first half of "The Corporation" over the weekend, and a little bit of "An Inconvenient Truth."

I also enjoyed "Loose Change" and "The Falling Man." (But let's not let this turn into a conspiracy theory thread!)

Got several lined up for the coming weekends, but always looking for more recommendations!

Saw Grizzly Man. I enjoyed that one....well, the first half was better than th latter.

It has to do with fish being introduced into african waters, and the fish basically eating all the other food, and killing off endegenous african marine life....very interesting.

I miss the movie store by my old house in Canada. It wasnt a blockbuster or rogers, it was an independent movie store with row after row of low budget, b rated, documentaries, cult classic, and new release movies..

ah...the good ole days, lol

I second Grizzly man. The guy was several sandwiches short of a picnic.

Enron- the smartest guys in the room

Slightly off topic but if you like natural history programs you should really download "Planet earth" from the BBC. It's got the best animal photography I have ever seen and I can't recommend it enough....

The Fog of War, a retrospective look at American foreign policy through the cold war featuring the reminiscences of Robert MacNamarra. Very engaging, and seriously worrying.

Bowling for Columbine, highly emotive but well-crafted film making from Michael Moore

Tell Them Who You Are, about cinematographer Haskell Wexler, interesting biopic/road film with his son mark interviewing him along the way

Any of the Michael Palin travelogues, Around The World In 80 Days is the best one.

Any of Billy Connolly's World Tour of... series. Quite informative and intercut with some of his comic performances at the places he visits.

Sidewalk Astronomers, about John Dobson, creator of the Dobsonian telescope mount and a fascinating thinker and cosmologist.

The Colours of Infinity, featuring Art C Clarke and his investigation into fractal geometry and the discoveries of Benoit Mandelbrot - great visuals and a hot soundtrack by David Gilmour (pretty old now and hard to find)

Crop Circles: Quest for Truth, by William Gazecki. The best of a bad bunch on the crop circle phenomenon / hoax craze. Quite long but highly engaging investigation into the events and the people. Good extra features on the dvd.

In The Year of the Pig - way out visual tapestry about the Vietnam War and the concurrent protest movements in the US - bloody difficult to get hold of but an excellent documentary

I'm also a big fan of band documentaries and concert documentaries. These are all on dvd.

Punk Attitude, about the history of punk
Syd Barret and The Pink Floyd Story is an excellent biopic about the madcap genius
Imagine, John Lennon
Live At Pompeii, Pink floyd
The Classic Albums series - Dark Side of the Moon is a good one.
If I Should Fall From Grace, about Shane MacGowan of The Pogues
Red Gold and Green: The story of Jamaican Music

One of the best documentries i've seen is the BBC produced 'Power of Nightmares'.

Check out anything by Errol Morris. He's like the king of documentaries.

Gates of Heaven- about pet cemetaries

The Thin Blue Line- about teens accused of a crime they didn't commit- the film actually freed them

A Brief History of Time- yes, Hawkins

Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control- multiple stories of multiple lives somehow knit together through excellent editing

Mr. Death- about Fred A. Leuchter, Jr, the guy who created the first electric chair and went on to be a Holocaust denier.

The Fog of War- MacNamarra speaks.

Then there's Herzog who did Grizzly Man, but his Little Dieter Needs to Fly is better. He is also featured in the documentary, Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, in which he does.

Also Ross McElwee's documentaries about his own life. He pretty much takes a camera everywhere and edits them into fascinating ruminations about his life and America. See his earliest, Sherman's March, and his later Bright Leaves.
