my feeling is that it doesn't, as none of the big name artists that I like - Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Autechre, Monolake etc - ever play there, but i could be wrong.

having been heavily involved in the scenes here in Canada for years, checking out parties wherever i go is always a priority

As far as native electronic artists go, Korea is rather barren. You've got a lot of techno-pop like Lee Jung Hyun's stuff, but not much in the way of serious elec music.

I found a cd by some Korean guy called Gazaebal, who has released two cds, but I wasn't too impressed. It's by far the most electronica-ish music I've found (done by a Korean), but still not that great.

Occasionally a big DJ will come through (eg. Sash, Mario Picuitto) but if you are looking for the same rave scene back home forget it. Just learn to adapt to turning up to big dance acts with the Korean men wearing their suits and the Korean women wearing their high heel shoes. I crack up all the time.
Japan is a lot more active on the electronica scene and they put out a great trance CD called Cyber trance. Download it off Kazaa or grab one when you go to Japan.

I'm no expert in this field but I have friends who are. They find what they're looking for every weekend in the Hongdae area.

it's not a club, it's a production company. it's based around clubs myungwolgwan and matmata in front of hongik university, but parties end up being all over seoul.

There are two major party promoters in Seoul, one is Sickboy productions and I forget the other one. Sickboy has thrown some fairly decent parties.
The problem is, with the big DJ's they uses rent out hotel space, so the prices are ridiculous. Paul Van Dyk was here last year but it was ruined by being held at some shitty hotel.. and the big names attract the Korean ajushis and gangsters in their suits and the glamour girls in their high-heels.

I went to a few really cool parties last year and they were held at nightclubs outside of Hongdae and the scene was alright. Mostly GI's with a smattering of Korean university kids and the idiot Koreans in suits and highheels thankfully usuaslly stick to the "vip room" and never touch the dance floor.

As for clubs, Matmata and Myung gol won in Hongdae spin some good stuff when there is no party in town, they are right next to each other and often host mini-parties with local talent. The problem is, Korean DJ's seem to be like most Koreans and just go with whatever new "Fad" is happening in the scene.. even if the fad is years old. They used to spin some great trance, now they seem stuck on spinning Breaks.. which I can't stand, but whatever. A few months ago it was Progressive and a few months before that it was Jungle.

If you're looking for "candies" at these parties, I wouldn't bother. Korean police often randomly ask people leaving the parties to give urine samples. And by ask, I mean force. Especially the bigger parties. Just do what most people do who want to spin, get really drunk and then twitch on Ephedrine, they can't bust you for that... yet.

Sickboypro has a website, its www.sickboypro.com but its not always updated, but they advertise parties regularly on the Korean Herald Website, which is www.koreanherald.co.kr and check the bulletin board forums.
