Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me out with a couple of questions. How long after receiving a visa issuance number does a teacher have to pick up the visa? Also, if things fall through with the school, how binding is that number and is it possible to get a visa issuance number with another school? I'm starting to hear about some shady stuff (late pay, messing with teacher apartments, etc.) at my hagwon and thinking of trying my luck somewhere else if I can. Thanks for your help!

The issuance number is good for 90 days.
If it expires you will have to re-apply for a new one (same or different hakwon).

Most (I can't speak about all of them) immi offices will NOT issue you with a new number while you have a current one issued by the same office. For example, you get a number issued by the Seoul office. They will NOT issue you a new number while the old one is valid.

There have been instances where people have had MORE than ONE visa issuance number issued by difference offices within the same 90 day time frame. For example, you got a number issued by the Daegu office. You MAY be able to also get one issued by the Busan office while the Daegu one is still valid.

If you get your visa it must be used within 90 days or it will expire and you will have to start the process all over again.

If you enter on your visa you are committed for 1 year from the date of entry.

Thanks for the very thorough answer. Do you know if there is any way that I could cancel the number so that the same immigration office would let me get a new one within that 90 day window?

I have no knowledge about how to or anyone successfully being able to cancel a valid number after it was issued.

Thanks again for the help ttompatz. I recently spoke to Immigration, and they said that the number could be cancelled if the employer and employee went down to the office to cancel it together. If that doesn't happen, they said it would expire in 90 days. However, they also said that, even after the number expires, I won't be able to get a new visa or visa issuance number. Does anyone know if there's any truth to that?

I'm not sure if I was clear in that last post. When I spoke to immigration, they said that because the contract was in the system, I wouldn't be able to get a new visa issuance number even if I didn't use the old one. What I had heard previously was that, if I wait 90 days for the number to experience, I will be able to sign on with a new school and get a new number (and visa). Does anyone have any idea which of these is correct? I would really appreciate any help.
