Hey,

I just had a lesson with my Grade 5 class. I showed them the original of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. They really enjoyed it. So, afterward, I was trying to ask them questions about the cartoon. Well, they just weren't listening to me and were chatting away to each other. I went through my normal routine of 'okay, be quiet please', etc. Wasn't working.

Anyway, I just lost it! I reamed these kids out like you wouldn't believe. I spoke to them in exactly the same way I would have spoken to public school kids at home. No simplification whatsoever and I didn't slow down either. Now, I'm sure they didn't get most of what I was saying, but they certainly got the idea. It felt so good! I didn't realize just how stifled I've felt from not using my 'normal' vocabulary. I'm the only foreigner in my school. So, even when I talk with my co-teachers I'm not using my full vocab and I don't speak as quickly as I normally would either.

I don't normally yell, so the kids were quite shell-shocked. Then I calmed down and I explained why I was angry with them. In the end it was fine and I'm sure they're no worse for the wear (the local teachers always yell at them). I do feel bad because I think I might have dampened the enjoyment of the movie, but damn it felt good! Can you tell it's the end of the term or what?
