After the Busan9 were arrested it made me think; Can teachers be deported for playing music in clubs..even if they dont get paid? This is a pretty serious issue. Whats everyones thoughts on this? Playing open mic might be a crime! Shocked

Where I was based in Korea, most of the foreigner bands never charged for havig an audience. Surely this is material in this case, unless I missed something (and by that I mean that I may have not read all the posts here).

don't worry. this sort of thing would never happen in the u.s. and as you've ever so cleverly demonstrated in your avatar, south korean peoples are entirely unable to think for themselves and are therefore an extension of thier u.s. overlords.

I doubt immi is too worried about foreign bands playing music for kibbles.

In my expert opinion, yes they are.

If the place you are playng in is charging admission (cover), then immi could say you are getting income from working outside your visa allowance.

Even if the place isn't charging a cover, they could still say they THINK you got paid, and deport, fine and drug test you.

The fact that NOBODY has EVER had this happen to them (to my knowledge) shows the motivation for harassing te Busan 9. You badspeak Korea? OK ok ok, you is go!

Except in Busan. Busan is dynamic.

DON"T BE INSULTING TO KOREA!!!!!
It appears to me that they were angry about being insulting to Korea. IF the rock band was playing "F*uck KOREA, F*uck KOREA" songs all day..then the police would be coming to stop the wonderful performance. Immigration probably doesn't care that a few people are playing in a band..they just don't want trouble.

--Remember the idiot who was on T.V. He said on a live program how he loves being on T.V because he can tutor all he wants and he makes great money. The next day all those illegal t.v people were booted off their shows because they had no visa for it. Now it seems only the Russians can do that t.v show because they have the entertainment visa.

now if only scarsdale yank wasn't banned for being a tool...

he may have something to say about the penetrators being ITAEWON'S BEST BAND and then some kyopo would get all butthurt about how dong bang shin gee is better and phone immigration on ITAEWON'S BEST BAND.

but alas, this is not 2005.

I heard a rumor that there used to be a ton of foreigner performers in the Hongdae club area but then enough Koreans complained that now Hongdae is a Korean only performer area.

But that's just a rumor.

edit: also i saw a really hot Japanese bass player at the last show I went to. She had a voice like a power puff girl too. Such dichotomy. So foreigners do perform sometimes.

Why?, they rock out. And yes immigration will arrest you for playing gigs here, i know of bands who have stopped in the middle of songs and made hasty retreats upon seeing immigration guys entering the building.

If it's an unpaid gig then it's not employment and immi has no case. As with volunteering, can anyone provide evidence of a single case of someone getting arrested for performing in a gig? However, if someone sang a song poking fun at Korea police may try to arrest them on false grounds.
