my visa expires at the end of january, but my boss has no teachers for the month of february, so wants me to stay an extra month. two questions:
is this even possible, given that my visa expires a full month before i would be slated to leave the country.
staying an extra month represents an inconvenience to me (a variety of reasons). how much extra should i charge? if my present base salary is 2.1 a month, i am thinking 2.4 would be fair for my inconvenience and trouble. is there any standard negotiation terms in this situation? |

Dealing with your 2 questions:
You can get a 1 month extension for working purposes.
You need to take a new contract showing the new completion date (make sure it is at least a day AFTER your last work day so you have time to leave the country). Your extension will only be until the expiry of the extended-new contract.
You will need your ARC, passport, copy of the new / extended contract, business registration and 30k won.
In regards to your 2nd question, holding your boss hostage and jumping your salary up by 300k for a simple 1 month extension is probably going to burn up any goodwill you may have gotten and may cause problems when it is time to leave. It's your call.
If you have a variety of reasons to leave it may be in your best interests to just say goodbye.
He still has more than 6 weeks to get a replacement so it is do-able if he gets off his azz. If you say yes now and then NO later I can promise you that you will have problems. |

your reply is much appreciated, and helpful.
one thing:
my boss has had the past 11 or so months to do his job and make sure january was sufficiently covered. he could have told me further in advance about his problem. as it is, i now have to cancel stuff i had lined up in my home country, if i agree to work this extra month. working this extra month represents an inconvenience on many levels, and i am doing him a favor any way you look at it, if i were to agree to stay the extra month.
i am not asking for a permanent raise of 300,000. i may have been unclear about that, and i don't want you to be confused about what i think is reasonable in this situation.
had he given me more notice of this whole extra month thing, i would have had not made the plans i made, nor would i feel inconvenienced, or put-out, nor would i even be contemplating asking for any extra salary. as it is, now i will have to cancel and reschedule these plans. this is not easy, convenient, pleasant, or trivial.
i hope that makes my position more clear.
that said, i agree, asking for more might burn some good will i earn by doing this. which is exactly why i am asking about this on this board. i want to see what is reasonable and customary in this situation, given that i am relatively new to korea and the whole foreign teacher thing.
thanks again for your reply! |

I extended for a 3 weeks at my old haggie job. Had a ***** of a director who gave me a hard time but once I agreed to stay a bit longer until the new teacher could arrive, her heart of ice melted and she treated me like a human being. Not that that's relevant to the OP
To extend, you should be signing a new contract and your boss should be able to take that along with your arc and passport to the Immi Office to extend your visa. Fairly painless. |

Actually, any input based on experience and any input based on a sincere desire to contribute thoughtfully to the topic at hand is ALWAYS welcome.
So, buff, thanks! |
