Quote:

Westerners who plan to visit Thailand for sex have recently received a new, stark warning from the government's new military government, be warned: we are out to stop you.

That was the message when Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani addressed a group of western journalists in Bangkok this passed weekend.

"Prostitution is illegal in Thailand," he said. The Southeast Asian country's police force is being assisted by "tourist police", and will be further bolstered by specially trained volunteers.

He is due to announce further steps before the end of the month to tighten up on the policing of the sex industry.

Each year about 480,000 British holidaymakers and almost as many from Germany, France, Sweden and other European countries travel to Thailand on tourist visas.

Great news. I'm off to Bangkok, after a short burn to Cambodia on Sunday. Both my girl and I had been lamenting that we would have to walk past the legions of dirty Westerners banging 16 year old, hopelessly poor "bar girls" while in BKK. You bastarrds will fry for exploiting those girls. AND, how creepy is it that the guys treat the girls like girlfriends. Cuddling a hooker like she is your girl, in PUBLIC. Sick freaks.

Last X-mas, in Phuket, I saw a British dude 'rent' a girl who looked to be about 10 years old. My girl and I couldn't believe it. Go Junta!

Why don't you go somewhere where this isn't an issue? Don't expect the junta to shut down everything.

Yes, I remember her. Have fun.

It isn't that big of an issue. Just a preference. I wear my heart on my sleeve.

I noticed that too. It is usually women, when they are trying to brush you off, mentioning their boyfriends.

Oh don't be so sensitive.

Back to the OP. I think this is great news. Though, I am not so naive as to think that the industry won't just be moved to Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam. The world is a sick place.

Great we've taken a great and fun country and are turning it into another Disneyworld knockoff designed to attract American and Korean families and their spoiled little children, see the "new", crappy Las Vegas for an example of this.

If you are in a couple go to Malaysia, there you can have all the same stuff as Thailand (the beaches, jungle, animals, etc) and none of the "bad" stuff.

I'm so tired of Westerner's who have a problem with the way a country runs and then change the country. Thailand just lost 500K tourists because of this and I guess Cambodia gained 500K.

Prohibition of prostitution is not a bad thing, for the simple reason that sex with prostitutes does not cause physical dependence, at least in the same way we understand drug addiction.

Just thought I'd make that truism known in case anyone saw a contradiction in BJWD's support for the prohibition of prostitution in Thailand and rejection of drug prohibition in the West. It's just not true that prohibition is a bad thing per se; it depends what's being prohibited! Guns, for example, should be strictly prohibited.

I detest the whole Thai scene and didn't indulge. Why any sane person would wanna pay to have sex with a woman who's had more siemen than the Port of Rotterdam is lost on me.

Lonely Planet claims that 90% of prostitution in Thailand is for, uh, domestic consumption, not for tourists. It would be a nice improvement to go to Thailand and see the sex trade toned down and less conspicuous. But we should be under no illusions that it's going to go away entirely, any more than the crackdown in Korea has made it.

The probable outcome of the government effort will be to cut child prostitution, which is a good thing and likely the reputation the Thais are trying to get rid of. I don't think the country is going to turn into Las Vegas because of this!... although Phuket in January gets pretty close to Las Vegas prices lately...

There'll no doubt be plenty of eslers here crying into their cornflakes this morning Laughing

Cinsidering the junta is unelected, how long are they going to govern for exactly??? It could be a case of never getting rid of them now and Thailand descending into some sort of nasty dictatorship.
And wheres thaksin these days I wonder? anyone seen any interviews?

Well, in this case, it's the Thai government that's trying to change how the country is run, and you're the complaining westerner.

That said, I've heard somewhere that most of the clientele for Thai prostitutes are Thai men. Is the government also planning a crackdown on the domestic demand?

NIce try, but all I ever hear from Wetern couples who got to Thailand is "why don't they crackdown and get rid of sex/drugs/drunken crazies/etc"

I always say go to Malaysia, its perfect for couples.

Although I really don't care since there is a reason its called the "oldest profession".
