So at what bitrate or quality setting are you no longer able to tell the difference?

I probably would not be able to tell the difference between an mp3 and a CD played through a mono speaker with no bass. There are couple of factors that anybody with some knowledge of music would know about :
- Recording source, I swear some recordings like they came off the back of a bus or from something of even lower quality. I can get a a bunch of low quality mp3s and record them to WAVs. This does nothing but make the original songs larger in size but no better in quality. Great way to win a bet though.
- Playback source, I bet 80% of the population out there are using either earphones that came with their iPods or $15 computer speakers. Its amazing how people can spend hundreds of dollars for a music player and only a few bucks on the very thing that enables them to appreciate them. Kind of like driving a Porsche with cheapo tyres.
Having said that, I believe FLAC does a pretty good job of re-enacting original recordings without compromising sound quality too much. |

I agree with your whole post 
The old rule was you should spend half your money, or more, on the speakers when setting up a system. Now that much of the cost is for the actual storage that might have to be rewritten, a tad. I spent as much on my Shure E500 as a 5G 60Gb iPod.
The supplied earbuds with an iPod are crap. The best sound mine made was as they hit the bottom of the bin.
FLAC is lossless, so includes all the information that the original .wav file does. It should sound as good as the .wav
