There are a couple of reasons why they "fry out".
Firstly the enclosure is so inadequately ventilated that yes it will overheat.
Secondly, most people do buy the fastest and the more complex HDs available. They run far hotter than slower ones and are not really ideal for external use. Ever wonder why the Mac mini only uses the slowest hard disk on their basic setup? Its because it doesn't have any decent form of ventilation whatsoever. |

I would be careful with these. I know several people who have bought these external enclosures only to have them fry out a few months later. These things tend to overheat to quickly. If you purchase one make sure the enclosure includes a fan. |
That is true, but those would likely be the sh*te enclosures they sell in Korea.
I (and thousands of other mac owners) have been using OWC enclosures with great success. I have two firewire units, one a 400 and the other that can go f.w. 400 or 800. just Google OWC and shop away for Mac items you just can't get here. They have good customer support, too. The prices are fair, the product great, and the shipping/duty cost worth the quality and peace of mind. (*can you tell I was in sales?)
Oh, and I agree with those who say buy from the Apple Store online over the phone or email. They have English speakers there. (I think a lot of their business is from foreigners). And the discount is 5%. And my MacBook is sweet, as is my iMac 24". I spoil myself. |

any chance you're running final cut pro on that macbook? just curious how good the render times are... the one's on my G4 powerbook are painful when working with hd... i've heard the new macbooks are a big jump... can't wait to get my hands on one after the holidays. |
