Hey guys,

I've been going back and forth on the online TESOL certifcate. There are pleanty of them out there, even 120-175 hour ones. Seeing as how I have nothing to do between the hours of 1 pm and 5 pm, Monday through Friday (public school), this would be proactive and productive.

However, Korea is not the end all, be all of my TESOL journey. I hope to go to Japan at some point, possibly Thailand. But, I have read that schools refuse people who have an online certificate. Actually, I understand. A teacher without experience, who has an online certificate is a risk. However, a teacher who gaine the experience first, then took the online course, is actually worth something.

Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Is it worth it? I ask this because, I do want my TESOL. But, I can't take time off work (well, if I were getting the holidays like other public school teachers, I would) and go take a course. Furthermore, Korea only offers a couple opportunities in regards to TESOL.

What to do?

Merry Christmas!!!

if you're in a public school type position that offers pay raises for em, just do a cheap online one. Once youre finished in Korea and want to move on do an in-person one before your next contract.

Also, check if an online TESOL course is accepted nowadays. I have heard that some public schools were not accepting online TESOL courses.

Hubba is same same.

I kinda think I will do the asian esl journal online one, as it's quite cheap. Then later, maybe during summer vacation or after I leave Korizzle, go get a "real" one (CELTA).

Like you said, so much time to kill. Even if it isn't "recognized" you can still pick something up from it maybe...probably.

Personal note: I don't really like all these people saying only a program with monitored teaching experience is valid. My teaching has been monitored at a public school for a year, but someone who does six classes in Thailand is more qualified? As if.

I thought I've read somewhere on here before that it may be possible to do one of the online courses like ITTT http://www.teflonline.net/
If you need the monitored teaching then you can go to thailand and pick up a few hours for $500(this is a guess) rather than spending another $1200-1400 for the monthlong course. Someone should verify this though
