KWhitehead.
I remember that. It was good. Wasn't Billy-T James in it, or am I thinking of something else?
My pick is 'Mckenna's Gold', from the late 60's. |

I forgot some fine entries.
John Ford's last movie: Cheyenne Autumn.
Not an Indian in the main parts, but the name alone is worth a vote for best ever title.
And.....ta da....
Little Big Man. One of the finest, funniest, saddest, most moving Westerns ever.
And Cat Ballou and Blazing Saddles. Who can forget Lee Marvin and that horse? |

Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and John Cleese in a small role that he pulled off quite well.
edit: once again, a really, really good movie. i usually *hate* westerns. |

Most of the great westerns have been already mentioned. Frankly I can hardly remember The Searchers or High Noon so no point in listing either of them among my favorites.
Unforgiven would certainly be on my favorite list - like most folks I could vicariously relate to the devastating gunfire Clint Eastwood's character unleashed on the bad guys after effective character and plot development.
In terms of sheer entertainment, Blazing Saddles gotta rank among the top comedies of all time. By the end of the film it's practically not in the western genre, though, being more of a spoof on Hollywood film production...
Cat Ballou was like a musical comedy western that was pretty entertaining and featured a talented cast that included the aforementioned Lee Marvin, Nat King Cole, and Ms Fonda (before she became known as "Hanoi Jane"... )
While not one of John Wayne's best films, Rio Bravo was also entertaining overall and makes my top ten list of favorites because of the colorful cast that included Angie Dickenson, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson.
Probably one of Wayne's most popular films (except among feminists who object to any positive portrayal of male dominance in a "battle of the sexes"...) was the western comedy, McClintock, which paired the Duke with his favorite co-star, the Maureen O'Hara.

How could you guys forget "Support your local Sheriff"? That was a great comedy. James Garner was funnier 'n hell in a role where he basically didn't play by the conventional rules.
Silverado was great, partially for the soundtrack, but one of the better ones has to The Cowboys. It stars John Wayne and he can't find any men to help drive his cattle so he hires a group of boys for a ride north. Great movie and a great soundtrack.
Speaking of John Wayne, what about the one that got him an Oscar? True Grit of course! Great shootout with him and Robert Duvall. |

| From Hollywood, The Frisco Kid. From Bollywood, Sholay. I really liked Stagecoach, too; it's as close to an art film as Westerns get and is classic John Wayne. |
