Bumped up on June 25, 2007 with these updates:
I see they are advertising again for another professor, on Daves and on the TESOL.org website.
Ask yourself "With a foreign, native teacher faculty of three or four, why are they having to look for another native teacher every semester to replace ones leaving?"
And check out my post on this ESL Blacklist :
http://blacklist.tokyojon.com/
(Have to scroll down a bit to get to one about Info & Comm Univ. Scroll down to the post dated June 14 2006 . . that's 2006 . . not 2007)
I taught there; I left mid-contract. And, I know who is leaving there now. He was the top-rated professor in the entire university; very popular among the students; very creative, very effective. PM me and I'll explain what would compel him to leave mid-contract.
One of the black marks on the place is related to severance pay. I had to take them to the Labor Board. Even though I successfully appealed to Labor Board and forced them to pay it, they are about to have another Labor Board investigation because they are refusing to pay severance to the teacher who is leaving now.
In their postings they say that the pay is about 29 million won. I will tell you that they will make you sign a contract that says this amount includes your severance payment and you will not get any severance payment when you leave. (They started this only this past year for new hires. The teacher suing them now does not have this term in his contract.)
This takes about 2.5 million won off the value of the contract. Then, they will make you pay 300,000 won a month for a dormitory room (where you will live among the students) (that's the "accomodations" their ad mentions). That takes 3.6 million won off the value of the contract. So, the real pay is about 23 million won a year .. . or less than you can get at any hagwon.
For this, you will suffer all the difficulties I pointed out in my post to the "blacklist", which continue to this day according to my contacts there.
There are serious problems at this university, in my opinion. Be wary of the Information and Communications University.

Daejon (got cut off by line limit)
And the link above: Was working fine when I put it in. Seems to be not working now. Maybe it got too many hits ? Maybe just coincidentally server is down? Maybe somebody blocked it? Anyway, . . wait and see if it gets cleared up after the weekend. The long and short of it:
-- emotionally unstable director who feels creativity is a challenge to her authority, needs a scapegoat, someone, a male teacher, to henpeck until she drives them out
- - university had to be sued to force them to pay the severance payment
- - "warm body in the classroom" is mission accomplished
- - payment not much above average; no housing support if you don't live in a dormitory room among the students, which you will pay 300,000 a month for.
- - teaching hours can be manipulated and you end up teaching seven credit courses in a semester, plus "camp" for incoming freshmen.
Check the link once it is working again for the full details. |

The link to the ESL blacklist is working again. Have to scroll down about 15 or 20 postings, or so, to get to the on the Information & Communications University.

Except you failed to realize that severance pay is not mandatory for university teachers. It is only mandatory for people who work 40 hour a week jobs. The Korean courts have ruled in this manner. The person who posted the complaint was lucky to get his severance pay. The school probably realized it was cheaper to pay than to go to court. |

Highly unlikely. The Korean Labor Board warned the university that it would be sued if it didn't pay. I doubt the labor board would get it wrong.

Here is what the US Embassy says in regards to severance pay.
Quote: |
SEVERANCE PAY (Taechikum)
The Embassy receives many inquiries and complaints about severance pay issues. It is a good idea to broach this subject early in your employment, and to be prepared for resistance. By Korean law, discussed below, all full-time employees, Korean or foreign, are entitled to receive severance pay of one month's salary for each year of employment. Employers cannot ask you to waive this, nor can they get around it by employing you on an 11-month contract. However, Korean courts have ruled that unless a Hakwon instructor actually TEACHES 40 or more hours per week, as spelled out contractually, he is NOT 'full-time' and is NOT eligible for severance pay. |

If it was stated in your contract then they probably have to pay but there is no legal requirment that severance pay has to be paid. Most private universities do not give severance pay. If it was required do you think that they would not be paying severance pay? |

Notice the word HAKWON instructor?
This does not apply to university instructors as their hours of full time employment is pegged much diffrently.

And if you checked around you would notice that some universities in Korea do not give severance pay. Why? Because they do not have to. Most national universities do but a lot of private universities do not. |

Yes, but not for the reasons you've stated. The Embassy webpage is useless for counting on ACCURATE information regarding Korean contract and labor laws. There is simply too much mis-information to rely on it.
The section you quoted is one of them. If you are full-time (40 hours is not fulltime in our industry) and you are enrolled in the National Pension Plan, then you get severance, regardless of whether it is a hagwon or uni.
Private unis do not pay into the National Pension, and hence, are exempt from paying severance. My last uni paid into NPS, I got (or will get) severance. My current uni has their own private pension, and I get squat for sev. |
