i've seen several threads re: break-ins, etc.
should I get a safe and bolt it to the floor?
also, with heat running through the floor in the apts., is there anyother option for safekeeping valuables, ie., passport, the ceremic ashtray my 4 year old niece made me, my ruby slippers, etc..... |

I have a cable lock for my computer, but haven't used it in my present apartment. Passport and valuable papers can always go in the freezer (common among the poor and paranoid as protection against fire, not theft.) |

You'd have to bolt it to the floor joists anyway to prevent anyone from just using a crowbar. Alternatively you could just be really careful and research the school you sign yourself away to for a year and make sure you have secure accomadations. Do you have a safe at home? Really, that's a pretty extreme reaction to a couple of anonymous internet postings. |

tip 1: never take isolated incidents and make them into the worst case possible scenario
tip 2: believe next to nothing on this site (except what I say of course.... )
tip 3: a safe bolted to the floor??? jeez...ever heard of safety deposit boxes? |

if you have valuables on hand, then just stuff them in the kimchi... koreans would never look there.... |

I think that Korea is relatively thievery-free compared to most other countries, definitely including the U.S. (I'd put a lock on a bicycle, though, if I had one...) |

Well I didn't come on here and make up a break-in story for the fun of it.
I have never felt unsafe in other places I have lived the way I have in Korea.
But that said, I haven't changed anything about my apartment except for better locks. I figure if it is going to happen again there's not a lot I can do.
A safe seems a really extreme - and that's coming from someone who had all of their things stolen from their apartment only a few months ago. |

Some acquaintances of mine had their appartment broken into in Downtown Daegu. It does happen. I wouldn't worry about a safe though unless you have some fairly expensive valuables. |
