i just got let go from my job (a God send). one of my ex-coworkers told me that once my visa is cancelled a lot of people just stay in the country and become illegal. i do have a very nice daily private gig, but i don't ever want to work for a hagwon again.
what are the real consequences of staying over my visa after my ex-employer cancels my visa?
she said that she knows 4 people personally that were able to leave the country with no fines or penalties. i have heard that you can be fined 100,000 won for every day over your visa, but does the govt really do this or is it a scare tactic?
if i were to do this, would it be just a shot in the dark whether i get caught leaving the country when i do decided to leave for good?
i'm not worried about getting in trouble for my privates gigs, just being able to leave the country when the time is right without getting hassled and busted hardcore.

| Take a trip to Japan. Comeback on a tourist visa. You will have a great time seeing the sites and experiencing Korean culture, now that you have the time(wink, wink). |

| Yeah .. do the tourist thing.. don't overstay, they can get really nasty when it comes to overstaying. |

No, it's not.
OP, you must make sure that immigration actually cancels your visa. You'll then get a 14-day exit order; if you don't leave the country by then, you're in big trouble. |

Don't risk it. Get on a ferry in the morning and come back in the afternoon. Overstaying your visa and being an illegal just isn't worth it.  |

| ...but i need more details. what will "actually" happen to me if i stay over my visa? and have you all actually ever heard of legitimate stories of people that were charged massive fines or thrown in jail by staying overtime? the only thing i'm worried about is when i decide to leave the country for good, i'm not going to get screwed. |

he said he doesnt want to get another visa and i dont blame him, hogwans
are terrible places to work. If immigration figures out that u overstayed ur visa and they catch you, you will be detained until u come up with the fine money, deportation fees and flight costs. If you dont have the money they hold u until u get it from someone else |

Stay and find out if you 'get screwed.' |

Forget them, stay. I want you to seriously overstay. Why? I want to read the thread you start in half a year about your time in immi's jail, having to come up with money you dont have, and maybe being someone's little girlfriend in lock up. So stay, forget the advice, you know better anyway.

As was said it is 100 000 won for every day you overstay(you do get a 2 week grace period I understand)...if you overstay for a very long time then you have broken an immigration law in a big way and Koreans don't take to kindly to this so you will be in lock-up until you pay the money....
It happens to plenty of South -East asian workers who overstay and basically they never leave as they know they are screwed when they try to leave the country...
Occasionally they will have time frames when people that have overstayed(also usally applies to South-east asian workers but includes everybody) can leave and not pay a fine. Of course you would probably be barred from ever coming back again and your passport may be red-flagged so that you cannot really travel anywhere because you commited a major immigration offence in a foreign country....
basically...you are a major fool if you overstay for a long period of time. You become a prisoner in Korea as the fine would be so big after one year(36.5 million won) that you can never pay it back......
Just pop out and come back on a tourist visa...a lot less stress |
