I just started eating persimmons and now I can't get enough
of them!
I heard they're good for a bad stomach or hangover and that's
when I started with the dried ones. Then I moved on to the
really, really soft persimmons and now I'm eating a firm one
for breakfast. It's some good stuff...

They resemble miniature pumpkins and even have a slight pumpkiny taste. But can't eat too many 'cause I was told they plug up the works.

I find them bland, somewhat mealy, and generally unappetizing. The world's lamest fruit.

Now MANGOSTEENS on the other hand, are far superior in taste, texture, and healthiness, and they're just damned FUN to eat! As such they are of course **IMPOSSIBLE** to find in Korea.

(unrelated rant--->) And why the hell is it so damned hard to find snowpeas or asparagus in Korea?

I found them bland but didn't give them a chance and so left off. BUT the tree I find amazing. For a fruit tree they are HUGE. Thus you see the fruit harvesting done with long poles. Along with chestnuts they are a symbol of the countryside.

Enjoy them while you can, they won't be in season much longer. They also have to be just right in terms of ripeness. Not ripe enough, and they have a weird bitter taste that makes it feel like you have hair on your tongue (Koreans even have a special word for this particular kind of bitterness - 떫다). Too ripe, and they get weird and mushy.

Lately, I've been eating at least two persimmons a day. I wish I'd discovered them sooner.

Love persimmons - dried and firm ones.. hubby likes them soft, so we always have a variety at home.

Kimchicowboy - asparagus can be had from Costco.

Dried ones are definitely sweeter. I'll stick to my tangerines.

However, a couple fresh persimmons in a blender with some other juice such as kiwi or pineapple make a great breakfast drink.

Love em. They're too expensive in the US and a lot smaller.

Gahm, Bahm, and Bahm Goguma are divine elements of the Korean winter experience, and without them there would be no reason to stay.

Persimmons are nice but the King of Fruits is the Durian and the Mangosteen is the Queen of Fruits.

I went hiking awhile back and came across an orchard - the leaves had all fallen but the fruits were still on the tree. Strikingly beautiful.

I had a short layover in Bangkok recently and took a cab into town to check things out. There was a very distinct (and quite disgusting) smell that would occasionally hit me as I walked the streets. I just assumed it was a wiff of the open sewers that are so common in this part of the world. My cabbie on the way back to the airport informed me that it was most likely Durian. I have to admit, though, that I want to try it -- the fact that somethig so stinky could be so loved definitely makes me curious.

BTW, since persimmon season won't last much longer, anyone know any good persimmon recipes?

I think Persimmons taste like an azzhole sandwich (not that I would know what that would taste like or anything) ..really I don't see the attraction.
