Yul played the game perfectly.
Normally, playing the leadership role does two things:
1) Puts a big target on your back and almost assures an early exit.
2) Gains respect of others for putting one's neck out there.
Yul didn't have to worry about #1 because he had the idol and he had a strong alliance. So that leaves #2.
And even if Yul wasn't really a leader, what matters is that this was the others' perception. And Yul made this perception happen.
Ozzy simply didn't reach out to people the same way Yul did. He thought his dominance in the challenges would speak for itself. He was wrong. |

Winning isn't everything... I think that Survivor is the most interesting of the TV reality shows from a sociological point of view, exploring group dynamics and individual ingenuity in relatively primitive settings. Impressive performances by also-rans have directly led to lucrative contracts and opportunities in acting, modeling, and other fields.
I found the other Korean-American, Becky Lee, to be an interesting character. Like Parvati (obligatory photo posted again below...) she also has experience as a boxer (at University of Michigan...) and she's also worked as a kickboxing instructor. Unlike Parvati, who's second job is waitress, Becky is a Washington, D.C. attorney. She's also an activist on issues concerning domestic violence and battered women. (They could probably use her here in Korea ...)

Sociology isn't philosophy, JejuEinstein ... (Anyway, I look at it as an opportunity to post pictures like these (which probably does make me a creepy person )

Fine, I'm just surprised people watch this show, since it's been outed as being more-or-less scripted, people are told who they must vote off, many scenes being reshot, and not shot on islands, but next to hotels and such. |

Poverty is hot.
Sundra, the black woman in the final four was hot also. |

Although, as you ("jejujitsu") say, much of it is fake insofar as reshoots, some scripting, and a whole lotta filtering out of boring stuff, there are enough real aspects to it, including the beautiful natural settings and the austerities endured (and casualties sustained...) by the contestants to make it worth watching - at least in spots (I usually only catch a few episodes, including the last couple ...).
I think the original idea ingeniously juxtaposes modern capitalism (and "rugged individualism"...) with primitive (New Age type) tribal spirituality and communal living. It's replete with all kinds of ancient symbols and rituals, etc...
I have no problem with the increasing percentage of contestants being struggling actors and models looking for exposure either. Over 90% of Screen Actors Guild members are below the poverty line, and I'm sure that thousands of them send in their resumes to get on the show.
If I wasn't teaching here in Korea, I'd probably try to get on it (and all the viewers would get to see me chanting on beads to get spiritually charged up before engaging in physical and mental survival tactics...)
"DC James" referring to Parvati (the name of Lord Shiva's second wife...) as Poverty is understandable since most of the "tribal members" pronounced her name like that . Notice the resemblance -

Sundra Oakley is a good example of a struggling actress using her exposure on Survivor to further her career in the performing arts:

| Adam said he voted for Yul to win the million based on Yul ejecting Jonathon prior to himself as he had requested. Regardless of the fact that it was actually a group decision, Adam believed it was Yul who had pulled the strings. Therein lies some great strategic play. He allowed Adam to believe that the ejection of Jonathon was his doing, and consequently got his vote (which turned out to be decisive) without even having to tell a lie. |

| They should have a special chess master version of Survivor, and maybe they could produce a Survivor: Iceland so legal refugee/exile Bobby Fischer could play in it... |

Not enough Americans to fill it.
They should have a true racial/religious/ethnic Survivor.
Team 1: Klan members
Team 2: Fruits of Islam
Team 3: Ultra-Orthodox Jews
Team 4: Mormons, or some other wacky cult
That'd be a good watch. |
