My kids have been raving about this movie for a few months it seems, so I rented it, turned on the subtitles, and watched it.
I agree partially with many posters on this site; Koreans movies are pretty decent. There are a lot of bombs, but several ones worth watching.
This movie is pretty decent, but I noticed 2 things:
1. At the beginning, someone dumped chemicals into the Han. Geez Louise, it was a foreigner!!!!
2. The funeral scene was memorable. I have never seen a Korean funeral, and I hope I never do.
It was actually pathetic more than anything. People were tripping over themselves, can't even walk. One guy is drinking soju right out of the bottle. Pretty standard there. Then some man came, someone in the family, and starting beating up the father, screaming and blubbering and falling all over himself. It was pretty sad.
Has anyone else seen the movie? |

Based on fact
8th US Army Apologizes for Dumping Toxic Chemicals
Asian Political News, July 31, 2000
SEOUL, July 24 Kyodo
The commander of the U.S. 8th Army, stationed in South Korea, apologized Monday to the South Korean people for the release of a toxic chemical into Seoul's Han River from a U.S. base in February this year.
Lt. Gen. Daniel Petrosky said in a statement, read by his official spokesman, "I officially express to you my deepest apology for the incident and resulting stress and anxiety due to the disposal of formaldehyde down a drain on Yongsan Garrison in February this year."
Monday's statement marked the first time that the U.S. military in South Korea has issued an apology to the public.
The U.S. military was accused by a South Korean environmental group on July 13 of releasing about 80 liters of formaldehyde into the river through the base's sewage system in February.
The U.S. military admitted the charge the following day but said the formaldehyde had been processed through the waste-treatment system and would not damage the environment. |

And they weren't KATUSAs that did it? They were last I heard. I will try to find a source. |

I thought it was really just a pretty standard horror movie. That it was Korean gave it a different feel but not a different focus.
Annoying thing was that the westerners were made to speak s-l-o-w-l-y. |

I thought it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen and have been thinking of suing the company for wasting 2 hours of my life. |

I saw this recently. It was bad. Monster movies are generally bad anyway, but this monster was the most boring monster ever. A decent horror movie monster/alien/killer animal, seems to be clever, to develop a bit as the movie goes along. This wasn't even a monster movie, really. The focus wasn't on a monster wreaking havoc on a community, it was on the rescue of a girl, which failed. And what was with that "agent yellow" ? Was it deadly or not? Some people seemed to be affected by it, but most just acted like it was Seoul summer bug spray. |

i heard this one is rotated on the cable channels, but one of my korean friends rented it for us to watch. the people in this movie have the most miserable lifes! the whole movie was like watching someone being drawn and quartered over a 2-hour period...yet ur fascinated and can't look away. even in some of its implausibility. it's called ADDRESS UNKNOWN in english. i'm not saying it's a good movie, or a bad movie...just...uh...a unique cinematic experience. my friend told me that the director of it is not widely popular in korea. no bombs here. of course some hi-drama antics from an american soldier, of course. and there's even dog beating and stew cooking! if u haven't experienced give it a whirl. just make sure u have uplifting plans afterward cuz it may leave a dismal aftertaste... |

re:"address unknown',I think Kim Ki Dok makes too may movies.Som and Nabbun Namja were good but now he's just making the same films and stretching the idea thin.
He's liked outside Korea. He received a Golden Bear(?) a couple of years back.
A ddress Unknown had the best example of whitey in a Korean film.he was permitted to be at least half-way natural. |

i second this opinion. i wanted a godzila-esque rampage through downtown seoul. instead i got a flowery hole-filled plot of garbage. it's a monster movie, not a damn family movie. (kinda typically korean, though, no?) |

if you really want to see a movie that shows foreigners being dumb, ignorant to the cause of korea and speaking terrible english that was clearly not handed to a native speaker for a little editing or clarification, it's "welcome to dongmakgol".
one of my favorite scenes is when the airborne drop and the commanding officer says something like
"when you land, be ready with the guns".
it's just... something nobody would ever say. "the guns". |

I don't see why they have to the token white guys speaking baby talk slo-mo English and then they go and put up korean subtitles anyway! If you are going to have subtitles at least give the foreign actors the dignity of sounding cool, or at the very least normal when they speak their lines. |

I liked the Host but Welcome to Dongmakgol was a real piece. of sh*t. So boring. Half the film was in slow mo. It should have been calling Welcome to Sh*t Falling Slowly From the Sky While You Wait For This Film To Hurry Up and F*cking End. |
