Seems too good to be true, but.... |
Well, to be honest, it won't really cost them that much, but makes for really good PR and newbie advertising. Having said that, I am not trying to downplay it at all, as it is nice to see a company give back to their customers (without being forced to). It's a nice gesture. |

I dont understand why people would pay even a little for skype, when yahoo messenger, (chat, voice, video) is free.
Is there something better about skype than that? |

| because with Skype you can call a telephone (landline), with Messenger it's only PC to PC. |

| Ok. Well, I lose a little, a very little in the voice quality talking to home, but in my microscopic apartment, I can spend the day with my family, and I dont have to hold a phone. I do my laundry, wash the dishes, and just talk to my family as if they were in the room. Leave it open all day long, and we take breaks, or soemtimes while I am doing something, she will ask me about some homework problem or we talk about budget or one of the employees, etc. With the vid cam, I can baby sit my son while my wife does her thing. For me, having to hold a phone would be a negative aspect of skype. |

You can do all that with Skype as well; it has video, and Skype to Skype calls are free. |

No you completely misunderstand. You can call someone's home phone from your computer with Skype. My parents can not turn on a computer, let alone handle the necessities for the free computer to computer calling (which is also free with Skype). So, I can call my mom using my computer and do everything you said you could but my mother still uses a phone like normal. The other major advantage is I can do all the things you just said while being on hold for 30 minutes calling my bank from Korea for about 2 bucks max. You can't do that with skype free or yahoo free messengers. |

You better believe it Seriously, they should try to train the general population to learn how to do this. The stress of just putting on the speakers and doing whatever you want while waiting on hold is nil. It can go for thirty minutes, and unless you are really busy or need to call someone else right away (not too often), you couldn't care less. This would probably cut down on angry callers somewhat in the future. |

Yeah... I love Skype as well. All things being equal, it is money well spent. I wish that everybody else would sign up for it, so i could call Skype-to-Skype, but the rates on Skype for international calls are reasonable.
The best part about it is that for a few bucks a month you can get a Skypein phone number. My mother, bless her, has a lot of skills, but conquering the intricacies of international dialing is not one of them. Nor is she comfortable with a computer. I signed up for Skypein, got a ten digit US number that she could identify with, and all she had to do was pick up her home phone and call.
Now, if I could just teach her about how to calculate time differences... |

I just got a Skype In number in the same area code as my mother and now all she has to do is call that number and my Skype in Korea rings; she did this the other day and we both spent $0.
Currently it's available in about 20 countries and costs KW 12,000 for 3 months, and KW 36,000 for one year. |

Skype's great and I've been using it for a couple of years now. Finally, my parents, aunt and one of my sisters have installed Skype along with my brother so it's now free when calling them.
A word of warning for Australian posters though. It seems that both Telstra and Optus sabotage the quality of Skype calls when calling (free) from one Skype account to another. My aunt's internet provider is BigPond and I've always in the end resorted to just calling her landline as the quality is so bad through Skype. I had no problem calling my parents with Skype until they recently changed their internet provider to Optus now I have the same problem as with my aunt. We gather it must be because Telstra and Optus being the main telecommunications providers back home don't appreciate people finding cheaper, or god forbid free, phone calls and purposely lessen the quality of these calls. Yet another reason not to sign onto any Telstra or Optus internet package, I still don't why people bother with their outpriced and limited services. |
