Gerald Ford, the last surviving member of the Warren Commission, died today. Finally, perhaps, the truth behind the assassination of JFK will be revealed. No, I'm not holding my breath.

I've heard there is a set date to release the files on the JFK assassination. I can't remember it, and it may be a rumor, but it was going to be about 100 years after the incident, so that all those involved would be dead. Little did they realize we will live to be 200 years old by the time 2050 rolls around! Losers!

I was sorry to read that he died. Ford was a good man of high integrity. That's why he was chosen VP when both Nixon and Agnew were in such trouble. The country needed a leader whose character was not in question. Mr. Ford served the republic well in a time of crisis. The country owes him a debt of gratitude for his service.

He was assassinated in 1963.

I disagree. It was the only practical way to get the whole Watergate thing off the table. Should Nixon have gone to jail? Almost certainly, but the most important thing was to get him out of office. Not a perfect solution, but a decent one.

I was angry about it at the time, but came to agree with it as time went by. Politics are pretty bitter now, but nothing like it was in '74.

I was so angry and disheartened that I gave my very first vote to Jimmy Carter (I don't regret that either). It has only been through the passage of time that I have come to believe that Ford made the right decision. The country was already fractured...it was time for mending.

CNN is reporting Gerald Ford has died. The media is determined to remember him in the best possible light.

It is important that we use this opportunity to publicize the role he played in both the cover-up of the assassination of JFK and Watergate.

Do not be so hasty to judge this, Bucheon.

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=74572

A colleague who specializes in late-twentiety-century American politics and who has been around told me that Nixon was despondent and suicidal, promising to shoot himself if anyone came after him with a warrant.

I saw some pretty interesting anectodal evidence on this myself in MacFarlane's memoirs. After MacFarlane attempted suicide, he claims Nixon wrote him and even visited him in Bethesda. MacFarlane says that Nixon appeared crying, telling him how he sympathized with how MacFarlane must have felt, but that suicide was not the answer. MacFarlane describes this as if Nixon had confessed to him that he had been exactly in his shoes -- although MacFarlane stops short of saying this.

Ford, too, in his memoirs, speaks of Nixon's "health" and "illness" without elaborating. He only states that these did not decisively account for his pardoning Nixon.

And it was not unique in politics. McNamara, too, was a broken man by 1968.

So Ford's pardoning Nixon was an act of leadership, as Ya-ta and Trinity24651 suggest above. But it was also merciful act.

On top of that, people forget that Ford volunteered and actually appeared before Congress to explain why he pardoned Nixon and that there had been no "deal." Sounds pretty admirable to me. Sounds like integrity even.

People are cynical and strongly dislike the United States. They are prepared to think the worst. And getting them to think anything but the worst is an unhill battle.

Still, I have seen no direct evidence at all to support such an allegation. If someone had something to show that Nixon and Ford negotiated a pardon deal, that would certainly undermine Ford's integrity. But the question is: does anyone have anything at all besides a cynical worldview to back up the accusation...?
