I've got a Nikon D50 camera and an ipod that show up on the system tray when I plug them into my USB port....yet I can't find or access them anywhere on my computer. My device manager says all the USB ports are working correctly, and I have tried reinstalling the original files from the motherboard cd, more specifically the files related to the USB 2.0. Other USB devices work just find, including a canon digital camera, logitech webcam and my wireless keyboard and mouse.

It's a pain in the butt because I can't upload photos from my camera, nor can I change any mp3s on the ipod, since iTunes says the ipod is not connected. Why would the system tray detect the device and even display the name of the device, yet not give access? Thanks

I FINALLY got everything to work after searching so many forums and restarting my computer way too many times. I used to have DAEMON tools installed, but removed it several months ago. The problem has to do with a SPTD driver file that was corrupt. Here is how someone else managed to fix their problem, which was the same as mine:

I think i have a solution for this problem.

I had the same problem and looked around the internet for a solution, but nothing solved my problem. All the answers suggested testing the usb stick on another computer or using the disk management to assign a new drive letter, but these procedures didn't solve my problem.

I had Daemon tools (virtual CD) previously installed on my system, and the installation was corrupted. I think it was after i repaired windows using the repair procedure from the original CD, which actually installs windows again over the existing one. After that Daemon Tools stopped working, disappeared from the "add/remove programs" list, but somehow stayed on the system and caused trouble...

I think what was causing the problem is not Daemon tools itself (i used ver 4.0.3), but the ScsiPassThrough-driver (SPTD) that is installed with it (ver 1.25). Someohow it confuses windows with the drive letters. (according to daemon tools "SPTD is also used in some proprietary security, antivirus and monitoring applications...") so maybe you could have the same problem even if you don't have daemon tools installed. Anyway, you may want to try these steps anyway, they might solve your problem.

i couldn't re-install daemon tools, since i got error when installing the sptd driver.

How to fix the problem:

1. download the stand-alone sptd driver from here:

or here for 64bit:

do not run the installation, but save it to the hard drive.

2. start the computer in safe mode.

3. click start->run... browse and select the installer from where you saved it, and add the word remove at the end of the line (so you will have something like (in my case i placed the installer on the desktop):
"C:\Documents and Settings\User01\Desktop\sptdinst_x86.exe" remove
and click ok.

restart the computer normally.
After i did this, i plugged in the usb stick and VIOLA! it works!

You should be able to reinstall daemon tools if you wish to. If you still have problems with installing it, restart the computer again to safe mode and do the following:

4. repeat step 3 but change the word "remove" to "add" like this:
"C:\Documents and Settings\User01\Desktop\sptdinst_x86.exe" add
and click ok.

5. restart again normally and install daemon tools.

I've installed both the software for the Nikon as well as itunes and the computer still won't give me access to either device. Like I said, in the system tray near the clock in the bottom right corner I can see that a USB device is plugged in, and it has the name of the device.

anyone have any advice? i still haven't been able to fix this problem, so I guess im gonna buy a new hard drive and reinstall windows, along with all the software and drivers. I'll use my current HD as the slave drive and just use it for data.

This will sound silly, but........

I had that problem when I first bought my digital camera. After hooking it up, it said it was connected, but I couldn't figure out how to access stuff. I'd forgotten to switch the camera to "view image mode".

The ipod...I had the same problem with that as well...I blame ITunes for that, though. I'd been using Ephpod to transfer files, and everything worked well. Then I decided to upgrade my firmware, but I had to download ITunes to do that. Once I did that, ITunes refused to let anything see my Ipod. So, I downgraded my Ipod to last year's firmware, deleted ITunes, and installed Ephpod, and it worked perfectly. However, I think Apple has monkeyed with the newer Ipods so that you can't use them w/Ephpod.

Actually, I'm having the same problem with my PSP now. My computer knows that I plugged it in, but I can't access it...or find it on My Computer....

I think I'm going to do a clean install..

Edit; I just fixed it - somehow...I went into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services... and started a bunch of programs that I had put on Manual. I then restarted my PSP, and it appeared on the box.

Maybe "Shell hardware"...I dunno...

Thanks for trying to help, but it didn't work. I've reinstalled old Itunes software, but the problem is that the camera and ipod don't show up under 'my computer.' I should get my hard drive tomorrow and try the reinstallation

I'm having the same problem with my ipod, except I don't think it is a program error because I just got my laptop in Jan. Any suggestions?
