So I went to the chart on the wall and got confused by all the little circles beside the Koreans teachers names.
Turns out, they are allowed 15 days in January, and 15 days in February. That means effectively they will actually have to make an appearance for 10-12 days during those two months.
My co-teacher told me seomthing else, which I suspect is a crock of poop.
He said that immigration notifies the school when the foreigner leaves the country and doesn't return on time. I guess that means they have the details of each and every E-2 contract in Korea. He told me some story of how the other school in my town that had a foreigner last year ws audited because the foriegner took too much vacation time. He says the school paid a heavy penalty. I think it's a large stinking load, but does anybody out there know the reality of it? DOES immigration track foreigners and notify school boards when they overstay vacations outside the country? I suspect I'm being fed a load to keep me quiet. I'm guessing the rational is that you can argue a personal decision by a manager somewhere, but you can't argue with immigration and the threat of audits.
Anybody?

How would Immi know,and why would they care,about some English teachers' overseas holiday schedule?If you didn't have a visa or had overstayed it,that would interest them.They have better things to do.

Yes,total bollocks.Give everybody a small gift from overseas but him.

Ok, the person I am referring to is a she, AND in the sticks near Daegu. She's not in country anymore, did a one year contract and went back to Canada.
Do you recall anything more about that, or what the source may have been?
Damn, could there be something to this after all?

Could be Daegu Immi being jerks, or that provincial Education office being jerks and sweet-talking Immi into being jerks.

Did you replace that person, or do you live in a neighbouring town?

I did not replace the person. She worked at public middle school, I work at private middle school, but we are/were in EPIK. I knew her a little, and I know the guy who replaced her. I'm in the same town too.

Well, yes it's their job to know about us, but in reality, it means that every E-2 visa holder has an electonic file that shows how much vacation we are allowed, and not only that, it tracks how much vacation we have used....somehow in and out of country....and as you said TUM, would they really be involved in policing the contracts? If they were, you would think that doing a runner would be much more difficult given that most runners are near the start of a contract (my SWAG), few people are given vacation at the beginning of a contract, hence, a foreigner on an E-2 visa exiting the country would raise a red flag.....
All very unlikely, but this thing Ekuboko is talking about is suggesting that there is more to it than we think.

Immi do not keep a file on what whiteys holiday periods are.Nor would they be interested in policing them.

The contract is one document verifying that you have a bona fide position here.

Dismiss that guy with a wave of the hand.He was probably some dweebling back in "Intelligence" back in his army days who never had any real influence.

Unortunately the dweebling (a lifelong lack of influence is a pretty good description) is my co-teacher and my link with my Province of Education and the supervisor in it.....

how would they track us if we stayed within korea for an extra long holiday?

Ah, well, this all goes back to another thread, "Im so freaked I dont know what to write in the..."
I have a wfie and two year old out of country. I'm to sit at my desk from Jan 20 to Mar 2 and "think about how to be a better teacher.", while the other teachers go home to their families. Today I found out how much vacation they got. I was surprised. I didn't think they got that much. So they are offering me 7 plus the two weekends. I have a camp in january for two weeks, but other than that, I am to sit at my desk from 8:30 till 5 every day. So, am I planning to be out longer? Maybe. I might just take that time to be with my family and if they fire me, they fire me. I dont know yet though what I will do in the end. I love my job and my school. May just be the best in Korea.
