Hope everyone is enjoying the festive season,

I have heard rumours that new Korean immigration laws require all foreign English teachers to have a criminal background check in order to recieve E2/E1 visas.

I have also heard rumours that this may come into play early next year.

In actual fact I had to provide a criminal record several years ago before entering Korea, but I thought that it was only the hagwan that specifically requested it.

Anyone have any knowledge about this?

I don't know if there's any truth to this rumor, but I think it's a good idea.

If they do, it will eliminate lots of undesirables.

A criminal background check is important as it would stop people who have committed violent acts or other felonies from giving other foreigners a bad name. So I suppose it does have its merits.

I have also been told to provide a CRC for the university. It is not easy to get that information being in Korea. Anybody experience getting one from Canada?

The US doesn't give federal criminal reports (it didn't when I tried to get one earlier this year) so I had to get a state one.
Since I wasn't living in the US at the time I had my folks get me one from Florida.
I've never lived there so of course I had no record. This may keep out the chav islanders and northern North Americans,
but us scabby septics can still get in just fine.

sorry to hijack - but this reminded me of a question...

Does anyone know how to go about getting a criminal record check from Canada, while in Korea? I am from Nova Scotia if that makes a difference. I looked online and everything says "you need to show up at the office in person". That doesn't help me much.

Thanks - and again - sorry to hijack.
