Has anyone heard about this? Who exactly am I supposed to contact the Ministry to let them know I help in an orphanage? And whats the big fuss about? jeez, and I thought I was doing something helpful. I have asked my school's foreign manager, but she hasnt got a clue either. Any advice? |

As I understand it, if you do volunteer work of any nature, you legally must get permission from the Immigration Department, because it is not permitted under an E-2 visa. In addition, I believe you are not allowed to take university or community college courses part-time under an E-2 visa. I know it sounds strange, but as I understand it there is not a strong (legal) tradition of volunteering and volunteerism in Korea; traditionally authorities have looked suspiciously at 'volunteer' activities, as they are not quite sure how to deal with them.
My suggestion would be to either have the orphanage or your employer contact the local immigration office and explain you would like to work as a volunteer. DON'T tell them you have started doing it already. In all likelihood they may just give you verbal permission to do so over the phone, or have you get some kind of 'letter of permission' from your employer assenting to you volunteering part-time. |
