Why I can't drink Korean beer (even though I'd like to)

Actually, it does. Different types of alcohol form during the fermentation process based on the temperature of fermentation and what's being fermented. It's possible for beer to have high amounts of fuesal alcohol if it ferments fast and hot, which causes the nastiest of hangovers, for instance. Or, people who try to distill using ingredients that have not been processed correctly might be creating methanol, or "wood" alcohol, which is why people go blind drinking moonshine.

I'm sure neither of these would be found in any abundance in Korean beer, but it's a fact that something pernicious is in those beers, as so many people get sick from them.

I know, but a Korean beer of 4.5% will not be significantly less capable of giving a buzz than another beer of equivalent alcohol. Of course, there will be some variation - in either direction - but not enough to prevent Korean beer from giving a buzz after drinking a large pitcher and three more bottles.

Yes, in theory. Unless there are other forces (chemicals) in play here. Some chemicals retard the effects of alcohol, and I wouldn't doubt if these were in Korean beer so that they might sell more of it.

I think if that were true then people would have cottoned on to it by now. From my experiences, and from those of many other native speakers, Korean beer is not that much difference from other beers in terms of giving a buzz. However, perception may be dimmed due to its light taste which can give the impression that the alcohol content - and so the associated buzz - is lower.

These are Koreans we're talking about. Their society seems stuck at that phase of social development where they'll believe all things Korean are inviolable. If someone were to prove inarguably, scientifically that Korean beer is tainted, people would rally in the streets (see: Hwang)! Laughing

Mack you remind me of a coca cola purist. Yeah Safeway coke will never taste as good as the real thing but suckers still buy them anyway. Let it be.

I drink Asahi/Sapporo BTW even though they're marked up. There is nothing quite like drinking a good quality beer after a long day's work. Ah the indulgence....

You should drink the local production. I even tried while I was teaching in Russia. OB isn't bad, Hite is okay with food and Cass is Coors swill, but they were light years better that the local stuff in Russia. If you want good beer- try teaching in POLAND! ( However. you won't make the money your making in the ROK).

You're not a very smart person. You're having a ridiculous argument about whether or not it's possible for someone you don't know to have not felt the effects of a rather large amount of alcohol. Rather than just saying, hmm that's strange, you have to insinuate that the story is farcical (which you are insinuating despite your misleading denial) and argue about it.

Whaaaaat a jackass.

I have little doubt from the posts from you that I have read, and your continual resort to insulting and commenting negatively about other posters, that if anyone here lacks intelligence it must be the person who you see when you look in your mirror. There is nothing wrong with suggesting a different possibility - you were insinuating that Korean beer is less capable of providing a buzz, and all I did was provide some arguments that suggest otherwise, or at least keep the matter open for discussion.

Anyway, back to more interesting things...

Went out and got trashed in Shinchon last night. Stupidly indulged in the pitchers. Had a splitting headache today and stayed in bed til 2pm.

Avoid the nasty sh%t at all costs.

Just thinking this morning how so many countries TRY to brew a decent beer so they can grab a piece of the international beer market. Most of Korea's neighbors have.

It's a little surprising how Korea, a nation obsessed with exporting products hasn't tried to do with beer what they have done with cars and cell phones.

Maybe they just have bad taste? Smile

Yeah, Korean beer just isn't distinctive enough to enable exportation. The commercial beer market is pretty much saturated in many developed markets, and Korean beer wouldn't add anything new.

Must be something they put in that I'm allergic to

At least during the world cup, the Budweiser was the real thing

Budweiser is beer?

(The REAL one is of course ..... )

I can't add to most of the posts. I agree that Korean beer is less than average. I had constant gut problems when I first got here. Saw a doctor and he reckoned it was the Korean beer doing the damage. That said it all. I'd love a cold Steinlager, Macs, or Harrington's micro-brew from NZ, but found some good Aussie VB last week at Homeplus. The one bonus of Korean beer being so bad is that I've had the pleasure of drinking so many beers I would have never of sampled back home.

Man, Budweiser costs 900 per bottle, and although you purists may have things to say about it, the hangover effect is minimal compared to the Korean stuff. For the cost and minimal hangover, it is the best value here. Waste your money all you want on the overpriced snooty beer. It all tastes the same after 3-4 of them anyways. Not many of you drink more of the stuff than I do, and if you do, well then let's get together sometime, and have a larf.
