Hi, i'm going to be arriving in Seoul on January 20th. I've been backpacking through India and Nepal for the past 3 months, so i have very little with me. I'm going to have my sister ship me a bag of clothes my portable harddrive, diploma and transcripts. I have no address and will be looking for a job on arrival. I know it's possible to have things mailed to a post office and then picked up has anyone had experience with this? Also what would be the best way to ship this package? USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL? And also, when this is sent the value given should be below $100 to avoid import fees? Also i'd really like it to take 2 weeks or less. Any other information would be helpful or a good website explaining this all (which i haven't been able to find).
thanks,

I say to just hold off on having your sister ship all your stuff until you have an established job set up. Once you are settled into your new job and place, then use your school's address to have all your stuff delivered. On the customs declaration, have your sister write down words like clothes, gifts, books, etc. As long as nothing is packaged new and expensive, you don't have to pay duty on anything. Use the cheapest carrier (I find USPS is generally the cheapest). Hope that helps. |

Hmm... I don't know if Korea Post has a general delivery system in place. Depending on your nationality you could enquire whether your country's embassy can receive packages for citizens.
Another possibility would be, if you are planning to stay at a hotel, make a reservation now and ask them if they could hold a package for you. Or, if you have a friend on the ground, do the same.
Remember, without your documents and diploma, you will not have an easy time getting a job at all, which sort of creates a catch 22. I would have the essentials needed to get going (diploma, transcripts) pulled out and sent immediately, so you don't end up spending months waiting for it to arrive. Plus, it is a lot cheaper to send a large package the slow way, so get the docs sent by air, and let the rest of it take the boat.
Good luck! |

I realize that some of that stuff you need sent is needed quickly. Do you have a friend working here already? If you have a trustworthy friend working here in Korea, you can temporarily use his or her school's address; just have the sender write in your friend's name on the packages. |

thanks for the help, i have been able to find out that the seoul post office does have a post restante system in place. but haven't been able to find a specific address. This is what the lonely planet site says
Main post office
internet ; post office
Banporo
It's also open once a fortnight on Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00, and it has some night counters open until 22:00 Monday to Friday and until 18:00 on Saturday. There is free Internet access and the poste restante counter is on the 3rd floor.
Hours: Mar-Oct: Mon-Fri 9:00am-6:00pm; Nov-Feb: 9:00am-5:00pm
If anyone has an address for this it would be greatly appreciated. |

If you know you are going to be in a specific city have your family see if they can send it to, say, DHL main office in that city. If they can do this then they can give you the airbill number, and once you get to that city you can go to a DHL office and arrange for pickup or delivery.
They same goes for a hotel you may plan to stay in.
So if you are going to plan to stay at a Holiday Inn then have it sent there and inform the hotel that you will be checking in on a certain date and ask them to accept and hold it for you.
I have done this at a hotel in Hong Kong, no problem. Checked in asked if my package came, they checked, said yes, and retrieved it form the baggabe room where they had safely stored it. |
