2 killed in Bangkok blasts; New Year's events canceled

Followers of the religion of peace I presume.

I was wondering when they would start murdering people in BKK.

Bet your bottom dollar or last won that it's those bombings are the dirty work of Muslim separatists in the southern region of the country, which is predominantly Buddhist.

Quote:
"There are two potential suspects, Muslim insurgents and Thaksin's residual power. I tend to think it's residual power. I suspect the previous regime," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Chulalongkorn University.

Quote:
Muslims make up the majority in overwhelmingly Buddhist Thailand's deep south, where they have long complained of discrimination.

The insurgents have carried out numerous attacks in the south, but are not known to have launched any in Bangkok.

From Sfgate.com

edit: Muslim insurgents/terrorists usually go after high profile targets, not things like veggie markets:

Quote:
At a vegetable market in the Klong Toey slum, where one bomb went off, a pool of blood and egg yolks covered the roadside next to an overturned motorcycle.

Police do not believe foreign groups or militants from the Muslim south are to blame, says the BBC's Jonathan Head.
Our Bangkok correspondent says many Thais suspect the attacks were the work of opponents of the current military government, which forced Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from office in September.

Wha---t?

Islamofascists not involved in this most recent bombing? Why, of course, they're gourmet mass murderers, very selective in their targets. They wouldn't deign to disturb a vegetable market. And ETA in Spain?

So 2 out of a 100 recent slaughters unattributable to them. Will wonders never cease?

Well, they do now.
Quote:

THAI intelligence agencies say operatives of the regional terror network Jemaah Islamiah were directly involved in the New Year's Eve bombings in the Thai capital that left three dead and 40wounded.
In reports seen by The Weekend Australian, the agencies say a key JI leader in Thailand's southern Narathiwat province was directly involved in the planning of the operation. The link contradicts earlier comments by military-installed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont who said the bombings appeared to be unrelated to the violence in the south, which has claimed more than 1800 lives since early 2004.

Dammit! You can't contradict what the bbc says! They're always right!

On a serious note, I was in Bangkok New Years Eve (not anywhere near a bomb) and when the news came filtering throught the party I was attending, most people naturally (and correctly, it seems) assumed it was the muslims from southern Thailand. When will people get it that the way these people (yes, let's just say it, muslim extremists) try to get their way is to kill other people? When will the so-called moderate muslims start pressuring these "fringe" muslims to stop this crap?

I was in Bangkok that day as well, though I made my way to the beach for the countdown. There was no mention by anybody of the bombs, but the number of police did increase suddenly.
