I'm planning to spend 10 days in Japan in April. Other than a visa run to Osaka a few years ago, I've never been there before. What I'm thinking is:

Tokyo 3-4 days
Kyoto/Nara 2-3days

I'd like to go down to Fukuoka, but not sure if it is worth going all the way down there for a couple days, then shooting back up to Tokyo to leave.

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Oh, I'm primarily a city guy. I like just wandering around exploring them. I think a couple days in Kyoto wil fill my interest in temples.

I spent a week in Kyoto and didn't get my fill. But I suppose for most people, 2 or 3 days will cover the major temples.

Nara is worth a day (more temples though).

Himeji Castle is very good, and not too far from Kyoto.

Osaka is nothing special, IMO.

Koya-san is cool, but again, that's just more temples. Although if you want to do a temple stay, that's the place to go.

Hiroshima is very interesting, but that's pushing it a bit west. If you go to Hiroshima, definitely go to Miyajima.

I like Fukuoka, but I wouldn't go back on my dime. That's what visa runs are for.

Tokyo could take up the rest of the time quite easily.

Other possible side trips from Tokyo include Yokohoma and Mt. Fuji. I haven't been to either, but they're both on my list of places to go.

Yeah, I'm considering hiroshima as well.

Pretty certain I'll visit Himeji Castle.

Thanks for the suggestions.

3-4 days in Tokyo might be a bit too much.

I did a long 4-day weekend there.. and got burned out with the subway travel I had to constantly do all the time.

I think that could be made into 2 days and spend more time elsewhere.

I did a 11 day trip to japan with a friend a couple of years ago but reverse to you that i started in Fukuoka and went to Tokyo and came back(be sure you get a JR rail pass)...you could do it in reverse

I had lived in Japan before so knew my way around well and my friend had never been so isuppose I was her tour guide a bit

We used kyoto in the Kansai region as a base for more than half the time..

We went from Fukuoka to Tokyo in 1 day and just worked our way back....

Day 1: Busan - Fukuoka on ferry,Fukuoka- Tokyo on the bullet train
Day 2: Ginza area and Imperial garden
Day 3: Sinjuku, Roppongi and Shibuya - evening to kyoto( 2 and a half hours)
Day 4: kyoto
Day 5: kyoto
Day 6: Nara(1 hour from kyoto)
Day 7: Osaka( 1 hour from kyoto)
Day 8: osaka - hiroshima. Stopped off at Himeji on the way, went to the bomb site in the evening
Day 9: Hiroshima - went to museum and site in the morning, went to Miyajima(really good - one of the 3 sights of japan) in the afternnon
day 10: Hiroshima - Fukuoka
day 11: Fukuoka - Busan in the morning

I have stayed at this place in kyoto twice...highly recommended. You need to book some way in advance however as it is very popular(except if you are going to stay in a 6 or 8-bed dorm). I stayed in a 2 bedroom one both times I have been as i went with my friend and girlfriend...really close to the train station as well.

next question:

I was thinking of making it my first stop on my trip to Asia but now am thinking I might do it at the end. If it were the first stop, I'd be there in mid-April (leaving 1 week before Golden Week), while if it is my last top, it would be the last week of June.

Now the only reason I'd do it in late june is because then it would make my packing easier: just clothing for hot weather. If april, i'll have to bring clothing I won't be wearing anywhere else.

So is April that much nicer than June?

If you go in April you will get to see the legendary cherry blossoms. Japan is beautiful when the sakura are in bloom. But they are only in bloom for about 2 weeks.

Also, be sure to buy a rail pass voucher before you leave Korea. If you are travelling to different cities, you will save a ton of money.

Too hot in late June....the week BEFORE golden week should be fine, except on the weekends. If you can handle crowds on a saturday and Sunday i think this would be better than sweating it out in the summer
