***CLICK ON PIC TO SEE DETAIL ****
Here is a thread for pics of things in Korea that just make you ask "Why, Lord, Why?!"
Why is the protective shipping plastic film left on stainless steel products ?! You see it everywhere: on door frames, on refrigerators, on street vendors' stalls, on public utilities boxes, on buses (parts around doors, usually), on elevator walls, . . . .
It peels off readily. Surprisingly, for as easy as it peels off, it seems capable of staying on forever!
I could understand maybe for something you intend to sell a short while later and you want to protect the steel, keeping it looking all nice and new when you peel off the film and reveal that shiny, unscratched steel. But, come on! Are the owners of this building going to be selling the parking garage door? !
Okay, yes it is protected; but okay, yes also . . . it looks like h*ll (insert "e") !
Unfortunately, my country farm-raised father did some things like this: There'd be a hairline fracture in the concrete patio and he'd patch it up, leaving a 4-inch wide whitish strip of patching scarring the patio ! You couldn't see the crack, but you could surely see the patch! But, by gollee, the crack was sealed ! (Maybe it should be "fortunately" - - it might help me understand the people who leave the film on the steel product!) |

Yeah that phenomenon has been discussed on here before. It is mistifying, isn't it? Whenever I see that plastic stuff, I am irresistably compelled to peel it off. It's just a reflex.
Here's one that I don't get:
The mysterious 'permantly closed door'. Wtf is the point of that? Is it just to f with people who aren't paying attention? |

Yeah, and aujulshi in my apt. bldg. seems to like to switch the door that is locked / unlocked every few days, just to keep you from ever knowing which will yield when you slam into it with your shoulder ( I don't touch door handles !)
Oh, and yep . . I do peel it off when I can without being noticed ! Three friends and I completely stripped a public utility box of it this past weekend! Compulsion it is ! |

Here's a similar one: Yep, those brass fixtures are nice and shiny . . . but you can't see them ! I mean, why make them all nice and shiny if you're just going to cover them in ugly, dirt-collecting, aging plastic bags ! "Yep, aujumma, you've done your job. You've shined the brass fixtures. Beauty? That's not your job! Your job is shine them. To h*ll with the aesthetics!" |

And here's one that bugs me to no end: Why can't they just make the businesses who put these out there install an outlet where they want to place the advertising balloons and signs? Aesthetics out the door; safety out the door. Amazing that people aren't tripping over them all the time; or, that someone hasn't gotten electrocuted on a rainy night ! And, the cords all over the place - - just plain ugly.
It ought to be: If you want to put a sign out there, you pay the price of installing an all-weather outlet at that spot ! |

If you live in a place that gets sub-freezing temperatures, you don't want cracks in your concrete. Unless you want really big cracks in your concrete. |

I know I've wondered why car owners here keep the little blue foam things on their car doors. Do they think that will protect their car doors? If I knew that I wouldn't scratch the paint, I'd rip those things off.
Seriously, why do they keep them on the car? |

They have to do *something* to keep themselves busy, and amused. I'm sure it gets really boring sitting around that little booth watching TV all day long. |

The small extra mirror on top of the side rearview mirrors really makes me laugh. Why not just have a bigger mirror? |

Some people just want to keep their stuff look like new. (shrug)
About the brass fixtures... I think the plastic bags are for protecting them from rain, cold weather or something.
(BTW, the picture above is a shot of an American sit-com, Everybody Loves Raymond. I highly recommend it to those of you who haven't seen it yet.) |

I knew a Korean who bought a Sony TV and kept the manufacturer's sticker on it to help show that it was quite new, even though the sticker went diagonally across the corner of the screen and took out a big chunk of viewing space.
Why watch the nice telly when you could just sit and admire its newness?

Isn't this a blindspot mirror, distorted to give a wider field of view than the standard mirror? I used them in England and never looked back |

So that when the ajuma, after having parked two inches from your car in the Emart parking lot, flings her door open, you don't (in theory) get your car door scratched or dented.
They do look kinda silly though. |

This one gets me as well.
I think it has to do with things being "new." Keep the plastic on the couch, the sticker on the TV and the blue foam things on the car. People will think we are rich-ee and that will push us up the social ladder. |
